LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In January 2026, a rumor spread online claiming that street gangs in Los Angeles agreed to a truce with each other to help protect immigrants from being 'abducted' by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

The rumor spread amid President Donald Trump's self-described immigration crackdown policy. But is there any truth to this? Let us find out below.

Claim:  LA gangs called truce to protect immigrants from ICE abductions

A TikTok video, posted on January 12, 2026, featured a screenshot of an X post that read, "BREAKING: Several gangs in LA are reportedly trucing so they can accompany people to their immigration hearings and prevent ICE from abducting them, and it's effective because ICE officials are afraid of them, which is why ICE goes after assimilated immigrants with families."

Similarly, another X post from January 9 read, "BREAKING: Major gangs in LA, Chicago, and NYC have reportedly agreed to a truce in order to mutually defend their cities and fellow citizens from the domestic te*****s in ICE, who are following the N**i playbook of instigating chaos so they can brutally crack down on freedom."

In late January, anti-ICE protest tensions flare in downtown Los Angeles. A crowd pushed a construction dumpster to block the entrance of a federal building during a standoff.

Meanwhile, authorities declared an unlawful assembly and used pepper balls and tear gas as objects were reportedly thrown and vandalism occurred.

Fact check: False, no credible evidence to back the claim

The claims made in the online rumors are false, as there is no evidence to prove that street gangs in Los Angeles called for a truce to defend immigrants from ICE.

No reputable media outlet reported on any such news. Interestingly, the rumor originated in a post from an account called The Halfway Post — a page that describes its output as humorous or satirical.

The bio of the X page reads, "Halfway true comedy and satire by @DashMacIntyre. I don't report the facts, I improve them." The Halfway Post also sells a book titled "Satire in the Trump Years."

Interestingly, the claim has been circulating since at least June 2025. The Halfway Post published the X post back then, which featured in the January 2026 TikTok video.

Despite the claim being labeled a satire in June 2025, the Los Angeles Times reported a story about the vice mayor of Cudahy, a city in Los Angeles County, allegedly calling for gang members to protect their neighborhoods from ICE.
