NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A rumor has been circulating on social media platforms claiming that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s free summer camp for children began with the counsellors bowing to Allah, sparking concerns and speculation among online users. Let us analyze the origins of the viral rumor and fact-check the claim’s authenticity.

Claim: Zohran Mamdani’s children's summer camp began with bowing to Allah

According to an X post, a free summer camp connected to Zohran Mamdani requires counselors to perform Islamic prayers facing Mecca several times a day in front of all children, no matter their religious background.

Parents who objected to this were reportedly told to withdraw their children and find a private camp instead.

The post also states that the camp is promoting “forced religious observance” and describes the program as a taxpayer-funded initiative that favors Islamic practices over religious neutrality.

It ends by accusing Mamdani and his supporters of enforcing "Sharia-style" rules and claims that New York has been “lost” because of these supposed policies.

While many condemned Mamdani for the allegations, a few others appeared to remain skeptical and called for a fact check.

Fact Check: False, no credible evidence to support the claim

However, the claim is false and baseless, as there are no credible reports that say the city’s summer camp began with counselors bowing down to Allah and forcing children to watch.

A search on Google for the claim yielded no credible reports by prominent news media outlets, which, if true, would have made it to the headlines, triggering widespread condemnation and debates.

Though not explicitly a parody account, the account has posted similar fake and unverified claims for the sake of engagement.

According to a fact check by Grok, “The post exaggerates or fabricates details. No verified evidence of a city's 'free summer camp' under his administration forces non-Muslim children to sit through mandatory Islamic prayers multiple times daily, with parents being told to withdraw or pay privately."

"This fits a pattern of sensational anti-Mamdani content from the account,” the fact-check stated.

The claim surfaced after Mamdani announced the launch of NYC Parks’ first-ever Parents’ Night Out, a free, one-night drop-off program that allows parents and caregivers to enjoy an evening to themselves while children participate in supervised fun at select NYC Parks recreation centers across the five boroughs.

While parents take time for themselves, children will spend the evening participating in supervised games, sports, and fitness activities, arts and crafts, media education programs, and nature exploration with Urban Park Rangers, all led by trained NYC Parks staff.
