Several sources describe Spielberg as a 'major donor to Democratic Party candidates and left-of-center advocacy causes.' The Hollywood Director hosted fundraisers and supported some groups, including the Democratic Governors Association.
Fact Check: Partly true, no proof he left to escape proposed wealth tax
The claims made in the online posts are not completely true. Steven Spielberg relocated his primary residence from California to New York City amid broader discussions of a proposed billionaire wealth tax in California.
However, there is no evidence that the move was motivated by the tax proposal. His spokesperson stated, "Steven’s move to the East Coast is both long-planned and driven purely by his and Kate Capshaw’s desire to be closer to their New York-based children and grandchildren."
Moreover, speculation linking the move to the tax exists in media reports, but it is unsubstantiated and contradicted by official statements.
Spielberg became a New York resident in January 2026 by moving into the San Remo co-op on Central Park West in Manhattan. He also relocated an office for his production company, Amblin Entertainment, to New York City.
Interestingly, the Director maintained properties on both coasts since the mid-1990s, so this is a shift in primary residence rather than a complete abandonment of California ties.
Multiple reports mentioned that neither Spielberg nor his representatives has indicated any connection to the wealth tax.
