WASHINGTON, DC: In February 2026, a rumor spread that President Donald Trump telephoned a live call-in show on C-SPAN to criticize the decision using the alias 'John Barron'.

The rumor spread after the US Supreme Court struck down sweeping tariffs that the POTUS imposed on imports from most countries. But is there any truth to this? Let us find out below.

Claim: Donald Trump called C-SPAN 'John Barron' after SCOTUS tariff ruling

Several social media users claimed that Donald Trump telephoned a live call-in show on C-SPAN to criticize the decision using the alias 'John Barron'.

An X post read, "This is INSANE. A man named 'John Barron' just called into CSPAN to show support for Trump’s tariff war. 'John Barron' is the fake identity Trump has used for decades to compliment himself in the media. They cut him off mid-call. Has Trump lost his mind???"

Similarly, another social media user wrote, "John Barron was Trump’s go-to alias in the 1980s when he was under scrutiny, in need of a tough front man or otherwise wanting to convey a message without attaching his own name to it."

A Reddit post read, "A caller by the name of John Barron (a pseudonym Trump has used for himself) calls in to C-SPAN to complain about the Supreme Court's tariff decision. The impression has people debating if it’s actually Trump."

The social media posts included a video clip of C-SPAN presenter Greta Brawner talking to a man who identified himself as 'John Barron'. He referred to two congressional Democrats from New York, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Fact Check: False, C-Span confirms it wasn't Donald Trump

The claims made in the online posts are false, as official statements from C-SPAN confirmed Donald Trump did not call C-SPAN as 'John Barron' after the Supreme Court's tariff ruling.

C-SPAN addressed the rumors on Sunday, February 22, via a statement on X that read, "Because so many of you are talking about Friday’s C-SPAN caller who identified himself as 'John Barron', we want to put this to rest: it was not the president."

"The call came from a central Virginia phone number and came while the president was in a widely covered, in-person White House meeting with the governors," the post added.

As per some fact-checking outlets, the caller was likely a skilled impersonator or prank caller taking advantage of the alias for comedic/trolling effect.

Moreover, no credible evidence supports the caller being Trump. The POTUS was documented in meetings when the call took place. The incident went viral mainly due to the perfect timing, voice match, and historical callback to Trump's earlier antics, but it was nothing more than a convincing impersonation.
