Fact Check: Did Trump deny Rosie O'Donnell's request to re-establish her US citizenship?
WASHINGTON, DC: A rumor has been circulating on social media platforms claiming that talk show host Rosie O’Donnell, who migrated to Ireland, has requested to re-establish her US citizenship, which has been personally denied by President Donald Trump, sparking speculations among netizens. Let us analyze and fact-check the claim.
Claim: Trump denied Rosie O’Donnell's request to re-establish US citizenship
The claim surfaced on a post on Facebook on Thursday, March 26, which stated, “Rosie O'Donnell's request to re-establish her US citizenship has been personally denied by President Trump.”
“O'Donnell moved to Ireland, denouncing her US citizenship, and then found out she doesn't qualify to be an Irish citizen. Her next move was to reapply to go home to New York.”
"’I don't think so,’ Trump told reporters. ‘She left, she quit, and she called your president some nasty things. She can stay the talentless hack without a country.’”
The post has garnered a hundred thousand views and tens of thousands of likes, as of this writing.
Fact Check: False, the claim originated as a satire
However, the claim is false as there is no update from O’Donnell that she has re-applied for a US citizenship. There is also no evidence that Trump personally denied her request.
Also, Trump never spoke to reporters about denying citizenship to the former ‘The View’ host, as claimed by the viral post.
Moreover, the claim originated from a popular parody account called ‘America’s Last Line of Defense’ which describes in its bio as, “Nothing on this page is real.”
A search on Google also does not generate any relevant reports by prominent news media outlets about the claim.
Donald Trump's longtime feud with Rosie O’Donnell
The feud between the president and the television host goes back more than a decade.
Earlier last year, O’Donnell moved to Ireland with her daughter and began the process of obtaining Irish citizenship, citing Trump’s reelection and what she described as a hostile political climate in the United States.
In a TikTok post, she explained, "When it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back."
Following this, Trump claimed that he is 'seriously' considering revoking her US citizenship.
This is not the first time Trump has made such remarks. In July, 2025, he suggested that O’Donnell posed a “threat to humanity” and was not acting “in the best interests of our Great Country.”
