Fact Check: Did Trump fall asleep during 2026 Memorial Day ceremony?
WASHINGTON, DC: A video circulating online appears to show US President Donald Trump falling asleep during a Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
Gen Dan Caine, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Vice President JD Vance spoke ahead of Trump at the cemetery’s Memorial Amphitheater. Let's fact-check the claim.

During the Memorial Day ceremony, the Headquarters X account (@HQNewsNow), founded by former Vice President Kamala Harris in February, shared a 31-second clip that allegedly showed President Donald Trump falling asleep during Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s speech.
The video quickly spread across social media platforms, including Instagram, Reddit, Threads, TikTok, and YouTube, with users debating whether Trump was actually asleep.
Similar claims often spark partisan reactions, with supporters arguing the president was bowing his head in reverence, while critics point to brief moments in viral clips as evidence of sleeping.
These debates frequently lead to criticism of users or media outlets that interpret the footage differently.
Fact Check: Trump appears to be tired during the Memorial Day ceremony
A closer review of C-SPAN’s already zoomed-in footage from the Memorial Day ceremony appears to show President Donald Trump looking tired, repeatedly opening and closing his eyes, wiping his eye or eyebrow at least once, yawning once, and patting his legs several times.
While it is possible Trump may have briefly dozed off during the observance honoring fallen US service members, the footage does not clearly show him nodding off definitively, such as his head dropping and rising again.
Because the available video is low quality and heavily zoomed in from a distant camera position, it is not possible to conclusively determine whether the claim is true or false.
The widely shared 31-second clip featuring Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth speaking about “the mourners” begins around the 30:16 mark of C-SPAN’s coverage. Earlier in the ceremony, during Gen Dan Caine’s remarks, Trump appears at times to slowly close and reopen his eyes.
Later, after Hegseth approached the lectern, Trump appeared to wipe his eye or eyebrow, yawn, and pat his legs. However, additional digital zooming further degrades the video quality and creates visual distortions caused by shadows, squinting, and image compression. Similar effects can also be seen in the faces of other officials on stage, including Vice President JD Vance. No higher-quality version of the broadcast or attendee footage reviewed provided definitive evidence to confirm the claim.
