WASHINGTON, DC: Robert Mueller, the ex-special counsel who conducted an investigation into Russian interference during the 2016 election, passed away on March 20 at 81. He was appointed as special counsel in 2017 by former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to manage the federal inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Following his death, a rumor circulated online claiming that President Donald Trump said he was 'glad' that Robert Mueller died. But is there any truth to this? Let us find out below.

Claim: Trump said he was 'glad' Robert Mueller died

On March 21, as news of former Robert Mueller's death circulated online, social media users claimed that President Trump posted on Truth Social that he was 'glad' Mueller was dead.

A Bluesky user shared the claim that Trump welcomed the news of Mueller's death, and included a screenshot of the POTUS' alleged post that read, "Robert Mueller just died. Good, I'm glad he's dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people! President DONALD J TRUMP."

Meanwhile, Facebook and X users also shared the same screenshot of a post allegedly by Donald Trump. The screenshot allegedly showed a March 21 post from Trump's Truth Social account where he wrote he was 'glad' Mueller had died.

Last August, Mueller's family reportedly told the New York Times he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2021 and had retired from practicing and teaching law in 2022.

Interestingly, the news of his poor health led the House Oversight Committee to withdraw a subpoena that would have required Mueller to testify on files related to the case of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Fact Check: True, Trump did make the post

The claim made in online posts is true, as Donald Trump did post on Truth Social that he was 'glad' Robert Mueller had died.

Shortly after the news of Mueller's death broke on March 21, Trump posted on his verified Truth Social account, "Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!" This exact wording appears consistently across major news outlets.

Trump's post drew widespread condemnation from Democrats and some others for lacking basic decorum, especially toward a decorated Vietnam veteran and longtime public servant.

The POTUS's longstanding view of the Mueller probe as a politically motivated 'hoax' or 'witch hunt' that targeted him and his associates provides the context for his phrasing.

Moreover, no credible reports dispute that Trump made the statement.
