Obama and Bush honor late Robert Mueller: 'One of the finest directors in the history of the FBI'
WASHINGTON, DC: Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush have shared tributes following the death of Robert Mueller, with Obama calling him "one of the finest directors in the history of the FBI" and Bush noting he was "deeply saddened" by the loss.
Mueller, who led the FBI through the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and later served as a special counsel, died on Friday, March 20, at the age of 81.
George W. Bush reflects on Robert Mueller’s early achievements
Mueller’s long career began with his service as a Marine in the Vietnam War, where he earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart before returning home to pursue law.
Former President George W. Bush, who appointed Mueller to lead the FBI in 2001, emphasized how these early experiences prepared him for the difficult tasks ahead.
Bush highlighted that Mueller took over the agency just one week before the 9/11 attacks.

He concluded by saying, "Laura and I send our heartfelt sympathy to his wife of nearly 60 years, Ann, and the Mueller family."

Obama also praised Mueller for his steady leadership and his strong belief in national values.
After the 9/11 attacks, Mueller oversaw a major transformation of the FBI, a role that earned him respect from leaders across the political spectrum.
In a post on his X account, Obama wrote that Mueller was "transforming the bureau after 9/11 and saving countless lives."

Obama said it was Mueller's "relentless commitment to the rule of law" and his "unwavering belief in our bedrock values" that made him a respected public servant.
"Michelle and I send our condolences to Bob’s family, and everyone who knew and admired him," Obama added.
Robert Mueller dies at the age of 81
Mueller's family confirmed his death in a statement, asking for privacy during this time.
“With deep sadness, we are sharing the news that Bob passed away on Friday night,” the statement said. “His family asks that their privacy be respected.”
The family had previously shared that Mueller was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the summer of 2021. Following this diagnosis, he stepped away from legal practice at the end of that year.
