PHOENIX, ARIZONA: In August 2025, videos circulated online claiming President Donald Trump told former President Barack Obama, “Sit down, boy,” during a nationally televised forum in Phoenix.

The description of the video alleged that the insult stunned the audience and sparked a national debate, with Obama delivering a sharp and memorable comeback. The video has been circulating online, but where did it originate, and is there any truth to it? Here’s a breakdown of the facts behind this claim.

Claim: Trump told former President Barack Obama, ‘Sit down, boy’

One YouTube video, titled “Trump Tells Barack Obama ‘Sit Down, Boy’, His Reply Leaves America Speechless,” garnered more than 325,000 views.

The video’s description framed the alleged conversation this way: “During a nationally televised forum in Phoenix, the air changed with one shocking remark: President Trump looked across the stage at Barack Obama and said, ‘Sit down, boy.’ The audience gasped, the cameras caught every second, and millions at home couldn't believe what they were hearing.” 

“But it wasn't the insult that people remembered most—it was Obama's reply. Calm, sharp, and unforgettable, his words echoed far beyond the stage. Overnight, the moment spread across classrooms, churches, workplaces, and living rooms, sparking debates about leadership, respect, and the weight of words.”

“This video takes you through the exchange that gripped a nation, the reaction that shook Washington, and the bigger lesson Americans are still talking about.” 

Fact Check: False, Trump did not tell Obama 'Sit down, boy' during a live event

There is no record of Trump ever making this remark to Obama in Phoenix or anywhere else.

A keyword search across news databases, transcripts, and archives returns no credible reporting of such an exchange. If Trump had directed that phrase at Obama in a public setting, it would have generated widespread coverage across major US and international media outlets. Instead, the only mentions of the alleged incident appear in identical viral videos and memes.

Claim labeled as fictional, contained AI content

The 48-minute YouTube video spreading the claim began with a disclaimer stating the content was “crafted solely for entertainment purposes” and that “any resemblance to real events, individuals, or situations is purely coincidental and unintentional. Everything discussed in this video is considered ‘alleged’ and should not be taken as fact. We encourage viewers to independently verify the facts and form their own opinion. Thank you!”

A similar disclaimer appeared in the video’s description, which read: “Disclaimer: The stories presented on this channel are entirely fictional and crafted solely for entertainment. Any resemblance to real events, individuals, or situations is purely coincidental and unintentional. These narratives are not intended to depict, reference, or represent any actual occurrences, persons, or entities.” 

The narration of the video describing “gasps” from the audience and Obama’s “razor-sharp reply” also appeared to have been generated using artificial intelligence. An analysis with Hiya Deepfake Voice Detector rated the voice sample 1/100 on authenticity, suggesting it was likely synthetic.

Dozens of nearly identical uploads across YouTube, TikTok, and X carried the same narrative, none citing any reliable sources.

Other fabricated clips followed the same theme. One video, titled “Barack Obama SHUTS DOWN Trump With One Savage Line on Live TV,” falsely claimed Trump had “called in live” during an Obama town hall in Phoenix.

These videos appear to have been created primarily to attract clicks and ad revenue by exploiting public interest in supposed clashes between the current and former presidents.
