Fact Check: Is Benjamin Netanyahu planning an attack on the US following the MoU with Iran?
WASHINGTON, DC: Following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran that aims to put an end to the conflict in the Middle East, a rumor began circulating on social media platforms claiming that a leaked intelligence report states that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is planning an attack on the US. Let us fact-check it.
Claim: Benjamin Netanyahu is planning a false flag attack on United States
According to the viral claim, Mossad had leaked information suggesting that Netanyahu's government is divided over plans for a potential ‘false flag' operation, with alleged discussions ranging from an attack on a US military target to a large-scale incident on American soil similar to the 9/11 attacks.
The post that surfaced on X read, “Mossad insiders leak that the Netanyahu government is enmeshed in an internal power struggle over whether the next false flag should be an attack on a US military vessel or another 9/11 style move on the US homeland.”
Fact Check: False, the claim was posted by a satire account
The claim, however, is false, as there is no credible evidence about such an intelligence leak that supports the rumor.
A search on Google for the claim yielded no credible reports by prominent news media outlets in the US and Israel, which, if true, would have been widely reported, triggering a worldwide debate and controversies.
Moreover, the X account that posted the claim describes itself in the bio as ‘satire.’ Hence, the post was intended as a parody made for the sake of engagement.
According to a fact-check by Grok, “This claim is unfounded satire/conspiracy content with no credible evidence. Garland Nixon, who describes his own output as humor and satire, posted it without sources."
"No mainstream or reliable outlets have reported any Mossad insider leak about Netanyahu debating false flags against the US (such as attacking a vessel or a 9/11-style attack).”
Benjamin Netanyahu seeks to sway the United States after Iran deal
The claim surfaced after the US-Iran MoU was perceived as a setback for Netanyahu.
According to CNN, an Israeli source stated that Netanyahu does not trust Iran's intentions but believes Tehran is unlikely to accept restrictions on its nuclear program.
The outlet reported that the Israeli PM is now trying to influence the debate in Washington through conservative media figures and pro-Israel lawmakers.
Pro-Israel podcaster Mark Levin on Wednesday said the deal “doesn’t make any sense” and called Iran’s reconstruction package a “slush fund.”
