WASHINGTON, DC: In the days following UFC Freedom 250 at the White House, a photo showing crews dismantling the event venue has sparked debate online. Social media users claim the image shows that the grass on the White House Ellipse was severely damaged after the massive UFC viewing party.

The historic event, held as part of celebrations for America's 250th anniversary and President Donald Trump's 80th birthday, drew thousands of spectators to the South Lawn and thousands more to a fan zone on the Ellipse.

Claim: Image shows UFC Freedom 250 damaged the grass on the White House Ellipse

The image shared by MeidasTouch showed an aerial view of the White House grounds in Washington, DC.

The post's caption stated, "An aerial view shows crews dismantling the UFC fighting venue on the South Lawn of the White House. The grass on the Ellipse has been completely destroyed following the UFC viewing party."

The photo was reported to have been taken shortly after the UFC Freedom 250 event.

It showed a large section of grass that appeared heavily worn and damaged. Much of the area looked brown and dirt-covered, with only patches of green grass remaining. The image also appeared to show signs of heavy foot traffic, event infrastructure, and temporary installations.

Visible in the photo were tire tracks, cleared rectangular sections of land where staging areas, seating, or fan zones may have been located, as well as construction vehicles, equipment, and stacks of materials scattered across the grounds.

The White House was visible in the background, while a large temporary arched structure, named "The Claw," remained partially standing or was in the process of being dismantled on the South Lawn.

Fact Check: Mostly true, but the grass was not completely destroyed

The claim is mostly accurate in its description of the image and the event, but it exaggerated the extent of the damage by saying the grass was "completely destroyed."

The aerial photograph, credited to Reuters photographer Aaron Schwartz, accurately shows crews dismantling the temporary UFC venue and related infrastructure on the White House South Lawn and Ellipse shortly after the June 14, 2026, event.

The image captured cleanup efforts following UFC Freedom 250, including the removal of the large temporary arched structure known as "The Claw."

The event caused visible damage to the grounds. Heavy foot traffic, spectator seating, equipment, the octagon, and the large temporary structure left sections of the lawn worn down.

However, describing the grass as "completely destroyed" overstates the situation. The turf sustained significant damage and required repairs, but it was not permanently ruined. White House grounds crews and event organizers had anticipated the need for restoration, and repair work was already underway.

Officials planned to replace sod, reseed damaged areas, and complete restoration by late June. Lawns on the White House grounds are routinely repaired after large events.

According to reports, approximately $700,000 was allocated to repair damage caused by the temporary structure and the large crowds. The available evidence shows that the damage was real and clearly visible, but the claim's wording exaggerates its severity.
