WASHINGTON, DC: A rumor is spreading online claiming that the Department of Justice is weighing charges against Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for allegedly helping migrants evade ICE.

The claim has gained traction amid ongoing political debate over immigration enforcement and is being amplified through social media posts that mix partial events with unverified assertions. Here’s a closer look at where the rumor came from and why it is circulating.

Claim: DOJ is weighing charges against AOC

According to an X post shared by a user named "James," it is alleged that the Department of Justice is weighing charges against Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for helping illegal immigrants evade ICE.

The post asked, “The Department of Justice is weighing charges against AOC for allegedly helping illegal immigrants evade ICE. Should she be prosecuted? Yes or No?”

The discussion appears to originate from a “Know Your Rights” webinar hosted by Ocasio-Cortez’s office, which provided information on how individuals should respond during encounters with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Critics argued that the guidance could be interpreted as helping undocumented migrants avoid enforcement actions.

Following the event, some political figures, including former acting ICE director Tom Homan, suggested that the Department of Justice should review whether her actions may have crossed legal boundaries. The post has generated strong engagement, with replies largely supporting prosecution and reflecting a partisan divide on immigration enforcement.

One user shared, "Yes! She should be kicked out of Congress! You kicked out that New York repubyfor lying in his resume’   She has done worse and I bet if it was uncovered she used her campaign money on herself too."

Another commenter wrote, "Yes! You play you pay! Save the tears you didn’t care that some of them people you help killed of hurt Americans."

The claim that the Department of Justice is weighing charges against Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for allegedly helping migrants evade ICE is false.

There has been no announcement from the DOJ regarding any charges, nor is there any confirmed criminal investigation or prosecution. In addition, there is no official legal action related to the webinar in question, and searches using relevant keywords have found no supporting evidence for the rumor.

The post also does not cite any official statement or verified source announcing such action. The rumor appears to have spread from a real political controversy but has been exaggerated into an unfounded claim of legal escalation, making it highly shareable but misleading.

It is circulating online due to a combination of factors, including the misinterpretation of calls for a “review” as formal charges, the high political sensitivity surrounding immigration enforcement and ICE, the added credibility implied by mentioning the Department of Justice, and repeated sharing on social media without proper context.
