Fact Check: Matthew McConaughey not running for Texas governor
All the buzz about McConaughey running for governor? Fake alarm. The campaign signs, the huge hoardings, unfortunately, they’re all just props for 'Brothers,' an upcoming Apple TV+ comedy. In the show, McConaughey plays a fictional version of himself running for office, with his longtime friend Woody Harrelson by his side.
The super-realistic “campaign” stuff is just props. No doubt, it’s clever marketing, and it’s effective, especially since McConaughey previously hinted at trying his luck in politics.
Being a University of Texas alum, McConaughey once seriously considered running in the 2022 Texas race, but ultimately decided not to, according to Forbes. Even now, he hasn’t completely shut the door, "Yes. I have thought about running for office, getting into this category. I’m on a learning tour and have been for probably the last six years of understanding what this category means."
He continued, "Do I have instincts, intellect that it would be a good fit for me and I would be a good fit for it. That would be useful. I’m still on that learning tour, and, you know, days like this. I’m learning a lot."
So, for now, all those signs are just part of a TV show and nothing more.
