How did the rumor of Matthew McConaughey running for Texas governor take over social media?

Over the past week, North Texas social media feeds have been flooded with viral videos and frantic TikToks showing what appear to be legitimate campaign signs. Even large stage installations promoting “McConaughey for Governor” are all over the place.

One standout video shows a massive stage installation adorned with Texas flags. It also features a tagline reminiscent of one of his most iconic movie lines - “Be Pretty Cool if You Voted.”

The clip was shared by Fox4 News under the headline, “Alright, Alright, Alright.. Is Matthew McConaughey Actually Running?” It went viral on Friday, November 14, fueling speculation across social media platforms.

The frenzy peaked when fans filmed the signs, sparking widespread belief that the Oscar-winning actor had quietly entered the political arena. Some of the placards even featured McConaughey’s image.

All the buzz about McConaughey running for governor? Fake alarm. The campaign signs, the huge hoardings, unfortunately, they’re all just props for 'Brothers,' an upcoming Apple TV+ comedy. In the show, McConaughey plays a fictional version of himself running for office, with his longtime friend Woody Harrelson by his side.

The super-realistic “campaign” stuff is just props. No doubt, it’s clever marketing, and it’s effective, especially since McConaughey previously hinted at trying his luck in politics.

Being a University of Texas alum, McConaughey once seriously considered running in the 2022 Texas race, but ultimately decided not to, according to Forbes. Even now, he hasn’t completely shut the door, "Yes. I have thought about running for office, getting into this category. I’m on a learning tour and have been for probably the last six years of understanding what this category means."

He continued, "Do I have instincts, intellect that it would be a good fit for me and I would be a good fit for it. That would be useful. I’m still on that learning tour, and, you know, days like this. I’m learning a lot."

So, for now, all those signs are just part of a TV show and nothing more.
