WASHINGTON, DC: Social media is buzzing this week with claims that President Donald Trump’s administration intends to dismantle NASA.

The explosive rumor ignited swift backlash online, with thousands of users defending the space agency’s vital contributions to US space leadership. Is the Trump administration really targeting NASA? Let’s dig into the facts.

Viral claim of Trump administration shutting down NASA sparks online debate

A viral post circulating on X claims that the Donald Trump administration is planning to eliminate the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

One post from a news aggregator site stated, "Trump administration considering eliminating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)." Another claimed, "The Trump administration is reportedly contemplating getting rid of/reducing NASA. The private sector would most likely make up for any losses."

The claims triggered a wave of backlash online, as many pointed out NASA’s critical role in keeping the US at the forefront of space exploration, from satellite innovation to landing humans on the Moon.

A speculated user said, "No credible reports indicate the Trump administration is seriously considering eliminating it altogether."

An enraged person said, "Since they contract out everything....why can't Space Command just take over and do the same stuff?"

A person worried, "This is a huge mistake and will be detrimental to our national security. Russia and China are still ramping up. We can’t afford to be behind them."

One person debated, "Misleading. Moving it into defense department."

Fact Check: False, Trump administration not planning to shut down NASA

There is no official word that the Trump administration plans to shut down NASA. While the government has proposed big budget cuts for 2026 that could cancel 41 space missions, the Planetary Society says NASA itself is not in danger of disappearing.

The online rumors started growing after Elon Musk, SpaceX’s CEO, accused NASA’s acting head, Sean Duffy, of trying to weaken the agency. On X, Musk wrote, “Sean Dummy is trying to kill NASA!”

He also shared an Ars Technica article saying Duffy wants to merge NASA into the Department of Transportation. If that happens, NASA wouldn’t disappear, but it might lose its independence.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Duffy has been meeting with senators to discuss how he wants NASA to be run in the future. Musk’s anger seems linked to Duffy’s recent comments that SpaceX is behind the government’s schedule for returning humans to the moon.

This debate comes at a time when there is also talk about who will lead NASA next. Duffy wants the top job, but rumors say Jared Isaacman, CEO of Shift4 Payments, might be nominated again after he withdrew earlier.
