Fact Check: Is Trump's claim his administration persuaded Walmart to lower prices true?
WASHINGTON, DC: As inflation and grocery prices remained at the center of economic debate, President Donald Trump claimed that Walmart lowered prices on a range of products after his administration urged the retailer to do so. The remarks quickly sparked discussion online, especially after Walmart's public announcement about the discounts. Here's what the evidence shows.
Claim: Trump claimed Walmart lowered prices at his administration's request
Trump sought to take credit for Walmart's recent price cuts, claiming the retail giant lowered prices at his administration's request.
Trump has faced mounting criticism over persistent inflation, with consumer prices rising after his tariff policies and increasing further following the outbreak of the Iran war in late February 2026.
As inflation remained a key issue, Trump dismissed a recent bipartisan housing affordability measure as "a yawn" and blamed Democrats for failing to bring prices down.
Ahead of the November midterm elections, Trump has repeatedly criticized Democrats as supporters of greater government control over private businesses. Yet, in a post on Truth Social, he said Walmart acted after a request from his administration.
"I have just been informed that one of the biggest, best, and smartest Retailers in America, Walmart, will be lowering prices by a lot, at my Administration’s request to celebrate our great Country’s 250th birthday," Trump wrote. He also claimed, “Walmart will, in particular, be dropping the price for a pound of ground beef by almost 15%, among many other products.”
Fact Check: Misleading claim
After Trump's Truth Social post on Monday, Walmart issued a statement saying that the price rollbacks at Walmart and Sam's Club were intended to help customers save during the summer season.
The company highlighted discounts on ground beef, corn, red cherries, ice cream, potato chips, and Coca-Cola and Pepsi products. However, the statement did not mention the Trump administration or suggest that the price cuts resulted from any request by the White House. Walmart also did not publicly respond to Trump's claim.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, consumer prices have risen 4.2% over the past 12 months, up from the 3% inflation rate when Trump took office. Some price pressures could ease after the interim ceasefire between Israel and Iran lowered oil prices by allowing more tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump has previously pressured Walmart over pricing. In May 2025, after imposing tariffs, he urged the retailer to absorb the added costs instead of passing them on to consumers. In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that Walmart should "STOP trying to blame Tariffs" for higher prices, arguing that the company earned billions in profits and should "EAT THE TARIFFS" rather than charge customers more.
