Fact Check: Is White House hosting talent show with lifetime federal tax exemption reward?
WASHINGTON, DC: The White House is currently undergoing a major revamp project focused on constructing a large State Ballroom by expanding the East Wing. This is a significant structural change to the White House complex in decades.
Amid this, a rumor circulated on social media claiming that the White House will host a National Talent Show where the winner receives a full federal tax exemption for life. But is there any truth to this? Let us find out below.
Claim: White House to host National Talent Show
A claim circulated on X that read, "The White House will host a National Talent Show where the winner receives a full federal tax exemption for life." The post garnered more than 5,000 views at the time of filing this story.
In July 2025, the White House announced its plans for adding a new 90,000-square-foot State Ballroom, which was described as an "exquisite" neoclassical-style space to address limitations in hosting large state events.

The new ballroom is being constructed on the site of the existing East Wing, which was fully demolished in October 2025 to make way for the new one. The new ballroom will be able to accommodate up to 650–1,000 seated guests, and will feature high ceilings and ornate design.
Moreover, the renovation is funded primarily through private donations, including from President Donald Trump and supporters, and not taxpayer money.
Fact check: False, rumor originated as a satire
The claim made in the online post is false, as there are no records, announcements, or reports from the White House, federal agencies, or credible news outlets about any such event or prize.
An in-depth search of recent news articles and official government sites showed no matches for a "National Talent Show" related to tax exemptions. If the rumor was true, it would require congressional approval for tax policy changes and would have made headlines.
Moreover, the X account @HoopsCrave, which shared the post, explicitly mentions in its bio that it's a "parody account not affiliated with @PopCrave". Such parody accounts often post satirical content for humor or engagement, and mimic real news styles.
Interestingly, earlier White House events have included talent shows, such as a 2014 arts education event hosted by former first lady Michelle Obama featuring student performers from underperforming schools. However, no prizes involved taxes.
Notably, recent tax policies under the Trump administration consist of breaks for tipped workers, recording artists, and performing artists.
