MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: A viral post circulating on social media has claimed that Mattie Weisse, the community organizer who set up a fundraising campaign for the family of Renee Nicole Good, was dismissed from her job for her involvement in the campaign.

The fundraiser quickly drew widespread attention and donations. Let us fact-check the claim about her dismissal.

Claim: Fundraiser got fired from her job

Due to the high-profile nature of the case, Mattie Weisse, who organised a fundraising campaign for Renee Nicole Good’s family, is facing severe criticism for her involvement in the campaign hosted on GoFundMe, which has raised over $1.5 million from 38.5K donations.

Some social media users have claimed that she was fired from her job.

Weisse, according to reports, is a family friend and a Minneapolis-based political organizer associated with The Management Center, a progressive nonprofit.

According to an article published by a foreign media outlet, Weisse’s employer reportedly removed her from their website.

Fact Check: The claim is an unverified rumor

However, the outlet noted that it could not verify the authenticity of these claims, as there is no public statement from Mattie Weisse.

Major news media, including Newsweek, have focused their coverage on the fundraiser’s success, its verification by GoFundMe, family statements, and the broader controversy, but none have confirmed any firing or employment consequences.

Based on a fact-check report by Grok, the AI assistant of X, it is confirmed that Weisse did organise the fundraiser and faced severe backlash and criticism for it, but claims that she was dismissed from work remain an unverified rumor.

On Saturday, Weisse closed the GoFundMe campaign page. “Thank you for your generosity. We’ve closed this GoFundMe and will place the funds in a trust for the family.”

“If you’re looking to donate, we encourage you to support others in need. We’re truly grateful,” the organizer wrote in a message to all donors.

She also shared a message from Renee's wife, Becca, to MPR News: “First, I want to extend my gratitude to all the people who have reached out from across the country and around the world to support our family.

This kindness of strangers is the most fitting tribute because if you ever encountered my wife, Renee Nicole Macklin Good, you know that above all else, she was kind. In fact, kindness radiated out of her."

In the statement, Rebecca further added, “Renee sparkled. She literally sparkled. I mean, she didn’t wear glitter, but I swear she had sparkles coming out of her pores. All the time. You might think it was just my love talking, but her family said the same thing. Renee was made of sunshine.”
