Fact Check: Was Sen Lindsey Graham's death the result of criminal actions?
WASHINGTON, DC: The sudden death of Sen Lindsey Graham on Saturday night, July 11, triggered a wave of misinformation across social media, with users pushing baseless claims that he was the victim of a criminal act.
Viral posts accused foreign governments, including Russia, Iran, Ukraine, and Israel, of orchestrating his death, while others promoted conspiracy theories about his travel schedule. The posts also claimed the FBI's assistance to local authorities was evidence of foul play.
Claim: Lindsey Graham's death resulted from criminal actions
Although it is unclear where the rumor originated, social media users claimed that Senator Lindsey Graham's death resulted from criminal actions.
Numerous social media posts blamed countries such as Russia, Iran, Ukraine, and Israel for Lindsey Graham's death.
One widely shared post on X claimed, "Graham inspected a drone factory in Ukraine yesterday. Russia blew up that facility today. Then, tonight, it is announced that Graham has died of a 'sudden illness.' No more details. I'd say there is a decent chance that Russia blew up Lindsey Graham."
Another viral post linked Graham's death to President Donald Trump, the conflict involving Iran, and Israel's intelligence agency, Mossad.
It is alleged, without evidence, that "Most realistic it was Mossad's job in order to push Trump to renew full-scale war with Iran. It clearly means ‘you are the next’. Lindsey Graham was the shadow of Trump, his black self."

Fact Check: False, no evidence to support the claim
The claim that countries or criminal actions caused Lindsey Graham's death is baseless. According to a preliminary finding from the medical examiner, which Graham's office shared, the 71-year-old senator died after suffering an aortic dissection, a tear in the inner wall of the aorta.
The finding said the condition was linked to the hardening of his arteries. His office initially described his death as the result of a "brief and sudden illness." Officials will determine the final cause of death after completing toxicological and microscopic testing.
Graham, a South Carolina Republican and former Air Force lawyer, died on Saturday night, two days after celebrating his 71st birthday. He had served in Congress for more than three decades. Graham was a leading voice on US foreign policy.
The rumor appears to have gained traction because of Graham's prominent role in US foreign policy. He advised Donald Trump on issues involving Iran and Russia and, on Friday, July 10, announced an agreement with the Trump administration to advance a package of sanctions against Russia following a trip to Ukraine.
Graham also strongly supported Trump's military action against Iran and was a vocal ally of Israel, particularly during the war in Gaza, positions that drew criticism from many in the Middle East and from some US allies who favored a diplomatic approach.
Some social media users also cited the FBI's involvement as evidence of foul play.
However, FBI Director Kash Patel said in an X post on Sunday that the bureau was assisting local authorities and had made all necessary resources available. When asked for additional comment on Monday, the FBI said it had "nothing to add."
