Fact Check: Was the CBP officer Raymundo Gutierrez who shot Alex Pretti deported to Mexico?
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: A claim has been circulating on social media alleging that Raymundo Gutierrez, one of the two CBP officers who shot Minneapolis nurse Alex Pretti, had previously been convicted in a r*pe case and was deported to Mexico. The allegation has sparked speculation among many who raised questions over the authenticity of the claim. Let us fact-check it.
Claim: Officer who shot Alex Pretti was deported to Mexico for r*pe conviction
According to the claims circulating online, one of the federal agents who was involved in the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis was previously deported to Mexico.
The rumor alleged that one of the officers who shot Pretti, identified as Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer Gutierrez, was a Mexican national who had previously been deported by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a conviction for attempted r*pe.
The claim surfaced after users began sharing an ICE post from August 2025, showing a man named Raymundo Gutierrez-Castaneda, who, according to ICE, had been removed from the country after convictions for 'attempted r*pe of a child victim' and 'assault with a deadly weapon.'

Government records reviewed by ProPublica show that the two agents involved in the shooting were Border Patrol agent Jesus Ochoa, 43, and Customs and Border Protection officer Raymundo Gutierrez, 35.
Both were part of Operation Metro Surge, an immigration enforcement initiative that started in December and sent armed federal agents to Minneapolis. The records also indicate that both officers are from South Texas.
However, according to a report by ABC 15 News, the man who was cited in ICE's X post, Raymundo Gutierrez-Castaneda, is a different person and not the CBP officer.
He is a Mexican citizen who was deported from the US by ICE in Colorado after being convicted of attempted rape involving a child victim and assault with a deadly weapon.
Although the names are similar, there is no evidence that Gutierrez-Castaneda and the CBP officer noted in government records as involved in the shooting of Alex Pretti are the same person.
Alex Pretti's death sparks protests in Minneapolis
Pretti’s death has sparked protests in Minneapolis, with demonstrators demanding more accountability and transparency in federal immigration enforcement operations.
Although authorities initially kept the names of the agents involved in the shooting private, federal officials confirmed that two federal officers fired Glock pistols during the encounter that killed Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.
Both officers have since been placed on administrative leave as part of standard procedure following the incident.
