WASHINGTON, DC: A former Trump administration official, Mike Gill, is fighting for his life in critical condition after becoming the victim of a brutal carjacking on K Street NW in Washington DC.

The incident, occurring around 5:45 pm on Monday, January 29, unfolded tragically, leaving another victim dead as the assailant embarked on a violent spree across the city and Maryland.

Mike Gill Critically Injured

Gill, a dedicated public servant and married father of three, was collecting his wife, an education lawyer, when tragedy struck. Witnesses on the scene reported that after being struck by the assailant's gunfire, Gill managed to exit his vehicle but collapsed shortly afterward.

Yolanda Douglas, an eyewitness, described the chaotic scene.

She told the Washington Post that Gill was wearing "a dress shirt and sweater, sprawled on the pavement with one foot still in the passenger’s side of a car. His right hand was twitching as blood pooled around his head."

The witness recounted how his wife "ran toward her husband and grabbed his hand," asking him what happened, but received no response.

The assailant, who is yet to be publicly identified, continued his rampage, attempting multiple carjackings in both Washington DC and Maryland.

One of the victims during this violent spree was identified as 35-year-old Alberto Vazquez, who tragically lost his life.

Gill, a seasoned professional, served as the chief operating officer of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission during Donald Trump's presidency.

A spokeswoman for Gill confirmed the incident, stating, "We can confirm that Mike Gill was the victim of the shooting at the 900 block of K Street Northwest on Monday evening and is in critical condition. Out of respect for the family, we have nothing additional to add at this time."

The assailant's violent journey included unsuccessful carjacking attempts on Third Street NE and a fatal shooting before abandoning the vehicle in Takoma Park. This ultimately led to additional carjackings and shootings near Baltimore and along I-95, painting a grim picture of the escalating crime rates.

The harrowing series of events came to a head at 4:30 a.m. when police discovered a disabled car on the 7500 block of Annapolis Road.

The armed suspect confronted officers, producing two handguns, leading to a confrontation where the officers, in self-defense, fired at him. The assailant succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.

DC Police Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll noted that the suspect had a concerning criminal history and appeared to be amid a severe mental health crisis during the violent incidents.

The carjacking epidemic in Washington DC has witnessed a drastic rise, with 959 incidents reported in 2023 alone, a staggering increase from the 2018 figures, per Axios.

Under Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser, carjackings have nearly doubled, with a shocking 60 reported over a mere 72-hour period just last weekend, per Fox 5 DC.

Social Media Reactions

Social media platforms were inundated with reactions after news of Gill's shooting emerged.

"This is absolutely heartbreaking," one posted on X.

"Sending thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. Let's stand against violence," another wrote.

"Was this a hit or normal DC violence that Mayor Bowser ignores?" someone else wondered.

"Congress needs to take conservatorship of DC- fire the mayor, enough of this lawlessness," another insisted.
