Authorities report that Reiner and his wife were allegedly killed by their son, Nick, on Sunday, December 14, according to PEOPLE. In a 2016 interview with PEOPLE, Nick Reiner discussed his long struggle with drug addiction, which began in his teenage years and at times led him to live on the streets.

He shared that he went in and out of rehab starting around age 15, and during periods of estrangement from his family, he spent significant time homeless across several states. Nick explained that these experiences inspired the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote. At the time, he spoke about recovery and returning home, saying, “Now, I’ve been home for a really long time, and I’ve sort of gotten acclimated back to being in LA and being around my family.”
