CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA: The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a homicide on Strider Drive in southeast Charlotte.

A North Carolina man named Freddy Renteria, who led Pine Belt authorities on a fast-paced pursuit on Thursday, February 1, has more serious charges against him, as per WDAM

What did Freddy Renteria do?

Freddy Renteria, 25, was wanted in North Carolina at the time of his arrest for first-degree murder attempt.

However, as per the news station WCNC, there were reports that the victim of that crime eventually died in the hospital. After her death, Renteria's charge was upgraded to murder. A plea for assistance from a medic was received by police early on Thursday morning around 3.30 am.

Police discovered 23-year-old Nataly Martinez unconscious at the scene on Strider Drive. Martinez's condition was deemed life-threatening when she was brought to the hospital.

However, police at the scene quickly learned that Martinez's condition "may not have been natural."

Police continues the investigation

Following the involvement of murder detectives in the investigation, Martinez's boyfriend, 25-year-old Freddy Renteria, was found to be the only person suspected of being responsible for her potentially fatal condition.

Martinez died at the hospital on Thursday, and Renteria's warrant was amended to include murder. The preliminary results of the autopsy confirmed the death by homicide.

Renteria attempted suicide when CMPD was trying to apprehend him outside of their authority; as a result, he was sent to a neighboring hospital. Police are not searching for any further suspects in the case. Crime Stoppers is asking anyone with information about this event to get in touch with the authorities.

On its X (previously known as Twitter), the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said, "On Thursday, February 1, 2024, shortly after 3:30 a.m., Independence Division officers responded to an assist medic call for service in the 8400 block of Strider Drive. For more information on the homicide investigation, please see the full release below."
