'Free protein': Delta Airlines mocked after maggots fall on woman’s head during flight to Detroit
AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS: Delta Airlines sparked outrage on social media when a passenger revealed a disturbing incident where maggots fell onto a neighboring passenger, prompting the plane to divert its course.
Additionally, Delta Airlines found itself embroiled in a lawsuit recently after allegedly over-serving alcohol to a passenger, Shawn Sturgeon during a cross-country flight, resulting in severe intoxication. Tragically, upon arrival, the intoxicated individual reportedly caused a fatal accident by running over his wife in an airport parking lot.
Former New York Representative George Santos also publicly criticized Delta Airlines, labeling his experience with the airline a 'nightmare.' Santos took to social media to express frustration with Delta's boarding procedures and CEO Ed Bastian, accusing him of making unsubstantiated claims regarding the airline's transportation of undocumented immigrants.
Delta Airlines turns back after maggots fall on female passenger
According to Fox 2 Detroit, a harrowing incident unfolded on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit when maggots reportedly rained down on a woman seated next to a passenger, prompting the aircraft to make a U-turn approximately an hour into the journey.
The passenger, identified as Philip Schotte by Fox 2 Detroit, recounted the distressing scene, stating, "She was freaking out. She was just trying to kind of fight off these maggots."
As detailed by Fox 2 Detroit, Schotte, who was aboard Delta Flight DL133 on Tuesday, witnessed the unsettling sight of numerous alive maggots descending upon the woman seated across the aisle. "I don’t really know what was going through my mind. I was trying to process it – disgust is one thing of course. We had to wait there for help to actually come," Schotte remarked.
Fox 2 Detroit reports that Schotte relocated to another seat once assistance arrived. Flight attendants traced the source of the infestation to a passenger's carry-on bag stored in the overhead compartment. "They found out that there was a rotten fish in there. I did see everyone’s reaction to the bag being opened, which was just an immediate pinching of the nose," Schotte disclosed.
According to Fox 2 Detroit, the fish, wrapped in newspaper, was claimed by the individual responsible. Flight attendants swiftly removed the cargo from the cabin, prompting the pilot to announce the aircraft's return to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Schotte, as relayed by Fox 2 Detroit, did not witness any repercussions for the individual linked to the fish and maggots. He boarded another flight back to the US several hours later, relieved to depart the unsettling situation. "I am surprised that both a rotten fish and live maggots were not picked up on by security," Schotte expressed.
Fox 2 Detroit also received a statement from Delta Airlines, where the airline extended its apologies to the affected passengers. According to the statement, the disruption occurred because of an "improperly packed carry-on bag".
As reported by Fox 2 Detroit, the statement elaborated that the aircraft was brought back to the gate, and "passengers were placed on the next available flight. The aircraft was removed from service for cleaning."
