WASHINGTON, DC:The release of thousands of Jeffrey Epstein–related files late Friday, December 19, has sparked immediate backlash from Democrats in Congress, who argue the records remain heavily redacted despite a legal mandate for full transparency.

From Chuck Schumer to Adam Schiff, lawmakers criticized the disclosures after four datasets were made public under the Epstein Transparency Act, signed into law by President Donald Trump and requiring the files’ release by midnight Friday.

Chuck Schumer

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, slammed the Justice Department for releasing heavily redacted files, saying the partial disclosure violates the intent of the law.

“Simply releasing a mountain of blacked out pages violates the spirit of transparency and the letter of the law,” Schumer said. “For example, all 119 pages of one document were completely blacked out. We need answers as to why."

Ro Khanna

Rep Ro Khanna, a California Democrat and co-author of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, posted a video on X criticizing the Justice Department’s release, saying it fails to comply with the law.

Khanna argued, "Our law requires them to explain redactions. There is not a single explanation."

Calling the release “incomplete,” Khanna said he is considering possible responses, including impeachment, contempt proceedings, or a referral for prosecution. “We will work with the survivors to demand the full release of these files,” he said.

Ron Wyden

Sen Ron Wyden, the top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee and a longtime investigator of Epstein’s financial ties, said the government will break the law if it fails to fully release the files by the end of Friday.

Wyden said Congress never authorized a partial or delayed disclosure.

“The law Congress passed did not say 'release some of the Epstein files' or 'release the files whenever it's convenient for Donald Trump,'" he said in the statement. Anything short of a full release today is a violation of the law and a continuation of this administration's coverup on behalf of a bunch of pedophiles and s*x traffickers,”

Jasmine Crockett

Jasmine Crockett also criticized the release of the Epstein files, questioning whether the Justice Department believed it had truly complied with the law.

“Did Trump’s DOJ really think dropping hundreds of blacked-out pages counted as complying with the law?” she asked.

Crockett went on to accuse the department of incompetence, saying, “I know it’s a bunch of unqualified folks with no backbone over there, but this is next-level.”

She further alleged that officials failed to meet transparency standards, stating, “They ignored a lawful subpoena, recycled public records, and conveniently left out Donald Trump. This is not transparency.”

Adam Schiff

Speaking on MS NOW, Democratic Senator Adam Schiff said his long-held concerns about the Justice Department’s compliance had now been confirmed. He described the situation as a “completely unlawful withholding of information” and argued that Pam Bondi should be called "before the Senate Judiciary Committee demand answers as to why the DOJ has violated the law."

Ted Lieu

California Representative Ted Lieu went further, accusing both the Justice Department and the attorney general of deliberately "violating federal law." He called for an immediate Oversight Committee hearing with Pam Bondi once Congress returns to session.

Robert Garcia

Representative Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, joined others in condemning the move. He said the actions fall far short of transparency and do not reflect what Congress intended when it passed the law.

He shared, "What we are seeing is not transparency, this is not what the law passed."

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

AOC called for Pam Bondi to resign. On X, she wrote, “Now the cover-up is out in the open. This is far from over.” She added, “Everyone involved will have to answer for this. Pam Bondi, Kash Patel, whole admin.”

She concluded by saying, “Protecting a bunch of rapists and pedophiles because they have money, power, and connections. Bondi should resign tonight.”
