NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: George Clooney compared Joe Biden to George Washington on Sunday, September 1, in his first remarks after a New York Times op-ed calling on the 81-year-old President to drop his reelection campaign.

The Hollywood elite lavishly praised Biden, downplaying the intense and occasionally embarrassing public "machinations" — including Clooney's own actions — that preceded his concession.

George Clooney calls President Joe Biden 'selfless'

“The person who should be applauded is the president, who did the most selfless thing that anybody’s done since George Washington,” George Clooney said when asked about his Times essay during an interview at the Venice Film Festival.

“All the machinations that got us there, none of that’s gonna be remembered, and it shouldn’t be,” the 63-year-old actor and director said, Entertainment Weekly reported.

High-ranking members of the Democratic Party, including Nancy Pelosi, united in their efforts to persuade him to withdraw from the presidential race in July following his disastrous debate performance against GOP rival Donald Trump.

Many individuals from Hollywood and left-leaning media outlets, including figures like Clooney, participated in the discourse through a series of strategic public comments and essays.

However, Clooney, author of the essay titled "I Love Joe Biden, But We Need a New Nominee", expressed his hope that this would not be the only detail history would recall.

“What should be remembered is the selfless act of someone who … you know, it’s very hard to let go of power. We know that. We’ve seen it all around the world,” he said.

“And for someone to say, ‘I think there’s a better way forward,’ all the credit goes to him, and that’s really the truth,” Clooney said of Biden.

George Clooney praises Joe Biden's past heroism

In his July essay, George Clooney expressed his longstanding support and admiration for Joe Biden, yet acknowledged that after the President debated Donald Trump, the effects of age on him were unmistakable.

“The one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can. It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe ‘big F**king deal’ Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate,” Clooney expressed his views in The New York Times.

He added, “Was he tired? Yes. A cold? Maybe. But our party leaders need to stop telling us that 51 million people didn’t see what we just saw."

“Joe Biden is a hero; he saved democracy in 2020. We need him to do it again in 2024,” Clooney ended his remarks by urging the President to step down.

George Clooney trolled for comparing Joe Biden to George Washington

George Clooney was brutally trolled online for comparing President Joe Biden to George Washington.

One social media user mocked Clooney and asked, "Sorry I must have missed something there… when did George Clooney start sniffing glue?"

Another gave a word remark and wrote, "Zero resemblance."

One commentator asked, "He is joking, right?"

"We have all read about George Washington, and Joe Biden is no George Washington," an X user said while replying to Clooney's remark.

One person said, "Stupid statement but we expect that out of Clooney."

Another commented, "That’s one of the most ludicrous things ever to come out of Clooney’s mouth, and there have been a lot of them."

"Do they both wear wigs? That’s the only comparison that might work," one individual said.
