WASHINGTON, DC: George Clooney didn’t hold back after President Donald Trump fired off a harsh New Year’s Eve attack on social media.

Trump had just mocked Clooney and his wife, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, over their new French citizenship.

Not one to stay quiet, Clooney fired back, and he even used Trump’s own famous slogan against him.

Trump’s NYE Post lambastes Clooney’s politics and career

On Wednesday night, President Trump jumped on Truth Social to comment on the Clooneys getting French citizenship.

He called it ‘good news,’ but really, he used the moment to launch into a bigger political rant.

Trump went after George and Amal Clooney, calling them ‘two of the worst political prognosticators of all time.’

Then he pivoted to slam France’s immigration policies, connecting it to his usual criticism of how former President Biden handled immigration in the US.

Trump didn’t hold back on Clooney’s involvement in the 2024 election.

He brought up that moment when Clooney publicly told Biden to step aside after that messy debate.

Then Trump mocked Clooney’s movie career, saying the actor got more attention for his political opinions than for his 'very few, and totally mediocre, movies.'

He went further, insisting Clooney was never really a movie star, just an average guy who always complained about common sense in politics.

Clooney’s retort: ‘We’ll start in November’

In a New Year’s Day statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, Clooney responded to Trump’s post.

“I totally agree with the current president,” Clooney said. “We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November.”

The comment was interpreted by political reporters as a reference to efforts aimed at shifting congressional power in the midterm elections.

The actor, his wife Amal Clooney, and their two children have all received French citizenship.

Clooney has praised French privacy laws, saying they offer more protection from paparazzi seeking to photograph his children.

Clooney, in a recent Variety interview, talked about how he and Trump used to be friends before politics changed everything.

He also took a shot at big US news networks for settling lawsuits Trump filed against them, saying those deals just make the press weaker.

“I knew him very well,” Clooney said. “He used to call me a lot, and he tried to help me get into a hospital once to see a back surgeon. I’d see him out at clubs and at restaurants. He’s a big goofball. Well, he was. That all changed.”

Clooney also argued that news networks like ABC and CBS should have fought back instead of settling lawsuits that the president filed against them.
