WASHINGTON, DC: Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida expressed his disapproval in a letter on Friday, May 3, of the Biden administration's plan to enlist Air National Guard personnel in the Space Force, according to The Hill.

Notably, in late March, the Defense Department filed a bill with the Senate Armed Services Committee that would have required Congress to overturn an existing rule that required governors to approve modifications to National Guard units before hundreds of service members could be transferred to the Space Force.

A letter opposing the idea was sent earlier this week by 48 governors of states, territories, and commonwealths to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

However, DeSantis did not sign the letter from the National Governors Association. Rather, he said in a Friday letter to the ranking members and leaders of the House and Senate Armed Services committees that the plan would "flout more than a century of precedent and undermine federal law protections for state control of their National Guard forces."

According to the Florida governor, the existing rule is a "sense statutory requirement" that guarantees National Guard personnel are engaged in domestic crisis response.

He wrote, "As a low-lying, storm-prone state, Florida is uniquely vulnerable to hurricanes and flooding that require significant, operationally ready logistics and disaster support, including from our National Guard units."

DeSantis contended that although the federal government has 'under-resourced' Florida compared to other major states, the state's National Guard ought to be larger than it is at the moment.

In his letter, he stated that the Florida State Guard was established by the state to support the National Guard when necessary. At Patrick Space Force Base in Florida, the Space Force conducts significant activities.

Notably, the nation cannot 'effectively protect our nation from foreign enemies when we cannot guarantee the safety and security of our communities here at home', according to DeSantis, despite the state's commitment to the Space Force's goal and success.

While urging the department to withdraw or reject the proposal, he wrote, "This legislative proposal weakens that guarantee and sidesteps the authority of the Governor to ensure Floridians are prepared and protected to address whatever domestic emergencies may arise, especially as we approach another hurricane season."

Several people on the internet sided with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as expressed his disapproval of the Biden administration's plan to enlist Air National Guard personnel in the Space Force.

A user posted on social media platform X, "Excellent and very needed" while one added, "This is the Biden/Obama administration; it’s going to take more than a letter."

A person also wrote, "Go get them Governor!!!" whereas one mentioned, "They're trying for civil war".

A person added, "Of course it would and that’s exactly why whoever is running our country wants to do it."
