Hakeem Jeffries confronted with Biden-era $5 gas prices question during Trump critique
WASHINGTON, DC: House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries found himself defending the Biden administration's economic record after a conversation shifted from criticism of President Donald Trump to soaring gas prices under former President Joe Biden.
Jeffries appeared on WNYW's ‘Good Day New York’ with host Rosanna Scotto, where the discussion centered on inflation, the economy, and Trump's handling of fuel prices.
As Jeffries criticized Trump's record, Scotto interrupted to note that gas prices had also climbed significantly during Democratic administrations.

Jeffries challenged over Biden-era gas prices
During the interview, Jeffries argued that Americans were facing higher costs under Trump, prompting Scotto to bring up fuel prices during previous Democratic administrations.
"It was a reckless war of choice that has obviously cost the American people significantly, particularly as it relates to skyrocketing gas prices in an environment where the cost of living was already too high," Jeffries said.
After Jeffries emphasized the importance of "solving our own problems" in America, co-host Rosanna Scotto reminded him that former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden also saw high gas prices during their terms.
"Gas prices were up under Obama too. And Biden, right?" Scotto said.
While Jeffries attempted to answer, Scotto pressed, "Didn’t we have gas prices over $5?"
"Well, there were gas prices in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic situation..." Jeffries remarked.
"And I remember eggs were like $12 a dozen," Scotto said.
Scotto then moved on to discuss the New York Knicks' NBA championship win with the New York congressman.
Jeffries attempted to pivot the discussion toward broader economic issues, arguing that Americans continued to face affordability challenges.
However, Scotto continued returning to the issue of gasoline prices, seeking a direct answer about the record-high costs motorists experienced under Biden.
Exchange comes as economy remains key political issue
The interview comes as both sides continue to focus heavily on economic issues in the run-up to the upcoming midterm elections, with inflation, consumer prices and household costs remaining key themes in political messaging.
In 2022, during a time when average gas prices exceeded $5 a gallon in some parts of the United States, Republicans lamented the higher prices as a sign of economic issues under Biden’s leadership.
Democrats, meanwhile, have pointed to global supply disruptions, Russia's invasion of Ukraine and oil market volatility as factors that contributed to the spike in fuel prices, while noting that prices later declined from their peak.
Jeffries maintained that Democrats were focused on lowering costs for working families, while Scotto continued questioning whether voters would overlook the record-high gasoline prices experienced during Biden's presidency.
Gas prices under President Trump peaked last month at over $4.50 per gallon but have steadily declined over the last few weeks as the Trump administration negotiates with Iran.
