HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS: California investigators are urging the public's assistance in unveiling the identity of the last victim of the notorious 'Happy Face' serial killer, Keith Hunter Jesperson.
Jesperson, who pleaded guilty in 2010 to the murders of eight women between 1990 and 1995, including an unidentified woman he called "Claudia," is the focus of renewed efforts by the Riverside County District Attorney's Office.
Who is Keith Hunter Jesperson?
Born in British Columbia in 1955, he relocated to the United States at the age of 12. In the aftermath of his marriage dissolution around 1990, Jesperson, a long-haul trucker hailing from Selah, Washington, embarked on a chilling spree of violence against women. His victims, numbering eight in total, were a combination of strangers and sex workers.
Employing strangulation as his method of choice, Jesperson callously discarded the lifeless bodies along the roadside. The moniker "Happy Face" serial killer was attributed to him because of the smiley faces he included in letters sent to law enforcement and media outlets.
Moreover, Jesperson continued his murderous spree until his arrest in 1995. His final known victim was a woman he had been dating, ultimately leading to his capture and subsequent life imprisonment.
Who was Claudia?
In 1992, Jesperson strangled Claudia after picking her up in his truck, dumping her body along Highway 95 in Blythe, California. Senior Investigator Ebony Caviness from the Riverside County DA's Office revealed that advancements in genetic testing unveiled the victim's ties to Texas, specifically Harris County.
"We saw that she had relatives in Cameron County, Texas, Harris County, and Southeast Texas," said Caviness, as per Fox. Claudia's father, Alfonzo Gonzales, was identified as a Harris County resident, now deceased.
New renderings of the victim have been released in the hope that they will prompt individuals with information about her or the case to come forward and contribute to closing this decades-old investigation.
Identity of Claudia
Based on the killers' description of her, Claudia is approximately 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 7 inches in height, aged between 20 and 30 years, possesses a medium build, and weighs around 140 to 150 pounds.
As per Riverside County District Attorney's Office spokesperson Brooke Beare, she had shaggy, untamed blonde hair and was attired in tight clothing, specifically a t-shirt adorned with a motorcycle print. Upon discovery, she bore a tattoo featuring two small dots on the left side of her right thumb.
Additionally, it is suspected that she was a regular smoker and frequently engaged in hitchhiking. Caviness emphasized the broader aspect of justice, stating, "Part of justice isn't just arresting or identifying the suspect; part of justice is giving the family closure and giving our victims an identity."
Currently, Jesperson is serving three consecutive life sentences at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem.
