WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump has suggested a potential Republican dream team for 2028, saying a ticket featuring Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio would be “very hard to be beaten.”

Speaking in a recent NBC News interview, Trump praised both men’s intelligence and political instincts, fueling speculation about who could carry the GOP banner once his term ends. While he stopped short of endorsing a successor, Trump made clear he sees extraordinary potential in the Vance-Rubio combination

The comments come as Republicans quietly look ahead to the post-Trump era, even as Trump insists the party’s primary focus should remain on delivering results now.

Trump praises Vance and Rubio’s intelligence and media savvy

During an interview with NBC’s Tom Llamas on Tuesday, February 5, Trump was asked to name possible successors within the Republican Party.

He responded enthusiastically, highlighting the strengths of both men and calling them exceptionally smart.

Trump said both Vance and Rubio possess “very high intelligence” and the confidence to engage in long-form and unscripted media appearances.

“They will do shows, they will do Joe Rogan as opposed to the opponent not doing it because they couldn’t handle it,” Trump said.

He also noted differences in their styles, describing one as more “diplomatic” than the other, but emphasized that both are highly capable leaders.

“They will be able to do whatever they have to do. I think there’s a difference in style. You know, you can see the style yourself. But they’re both very capable,” Trump added. “I do think this: The combination of JD and Marco would be very hard to be beaten, I think. But you never know in politics, right?”

Trump downplays early 2028 talk while hinting at future endorsement

Despite openly praising the duo, Trump said he does not want to spark internal competition within the party so early.

“Well, I don’t want to get into this. We have three years to go,” Trump told Llamas.

He said he would likely be inclined to support a successor when the time is right but stressed that both men are currently doing a strong job.

“I have two people that are doing a great job. I don’t want to have an argument with, or I don’t want to use the word ‘fight’ — it wouldn’t be a fight. But look, JD is fantastic, and Marco is fantastic,” Trump said.

Vance and Rubio emphasize governing over future ambitions

While Trump is willing to speculate, both Vance and Rubio have publicly emphasized focusing on their current responsibilities rather than 2028 politics.

In a November 2025 interview, Vance said he has “thought about what that moment might look like,” but plans to wait until after the 2026 midterms to discuss any potential run with Trump.

“If we do a good job, the politics will take care of itself. If we do a terrible job, the politics will take care of itself in the other direction,” Vance said.

Rubio has also spoken favorably about Vance’s future prospects.

During an interview with Lara Trump on Fox News Channel in mid-July 2025, Rubio said he believes the vice president would be a “great nominee” if he chooses to run.

In a December 16 Vanity Fair interview,  Rubio reiterated that support, stating, “If JD Vance runs for president, he’s going to be our nominee, and I’ll be one of the first people to support him.”
