Harris' sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc forms PAC to support federal candidates ahead of 2024 election
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: The Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc, whose alumni list includes Vice President Kamala Harris, formed a political action committee (PAC) on Thursday, August 8, to raise money in support of federal candidates.
It is the oldest Black sorority in the United States and a part of the 'Divine Nine' group of historically Black fraternities and sororities which together have more than 2.5 million active members across the country.
The announcement of the new PAC, titled the 1908 PAC, adds to the voter registration, education, and mobilization campaigns previously undertaken by the AKA, reported The Atlanta Voice.
According to the FEC filing, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority PAC, Inc (AKA 1908 PAC) lists its address as the Ivy Center, which is the sorority’s corporate headquarters in Chicago.
Kamala Harris' relationship with AKA
Kamala Harris pledged at the sorority’s Alpha Chapter at Howard University in 1986. She is part of a membership class known as ‘The 38 Jewels of Iridescent Splendor,’ which includes thirty-eight women.
According to NPR, Harris had already focused her campaign on the sorority group even before President Joe Biden suspended his reelection campaign and endorsed her to lead the Democratic ticket on July 21.
Earlier that month, Harris addressed the crowd at the annual Boule convention in Dallas, sporting the group’s signature salmon pink and apple green. She acknowledged the sorority's impact on her career, saying, "You are such an incredible part of my journey and I love you guys."
The Democratic nominee had also promoted the sorority at the Democratic National Convention back in 2020, stating, "Family is my beloved Alpha Kappa Alpha, our Divine Nine, and my HBCU brothers and sisters."
AKA's stance on the upcoming election
Members of AKA were featured prominently among the group of 44,000 women who raised $1.5 million for the Harris campaign within a day after she announced running for the White House, according to The Atlanta Voice.
Prominent Democratic donors like Wanda Sykes, and Ava DuVernay have been members of the group, and have reportedly expressed their support for the Vice President in the upcoming general election.
According to the publication, the AKA is presently set to mobilize and organize millions of Black voters in key swing states across the country.
