DES MOINES, IOWA: Former President Donald Trump found himself in hot water after attempting to retract his earlier claim that if he won the 2024 presidential run, he would be a dictator for the first day of his second term.

The 77-year-old GOP frontrunner was at a televised town hall in Des Moines, Iowa, when he told Fox News hosts Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum that he was not “going to be a dictator” and that his remark was taken out of context.

"I said I'm gonna be a dictator for one day, and we're gonna do two things: The border, we're gonna make it so tight you can't get in," Trump said, speaking about a previous appearance alongside Fox News host Sean Hannity.

“The border, we’re going to make it so tight you can’t get in unless you come in legally. And the other is energy. We’re going to drill, baby drill. After that, I’m not going to be a dictator.”

He blamed the media for not emphasizing parts of his initial comment when he said he would only be a dictator on energy policy and order.

“They cut it, they go, ‘I’m going to be a dictator’, but they cut the rest of the sentence. No, no, I am not going to be a dictator,” Trump said, adding, “This is just a political ploy – Trump is a dictator, he wants to be a dictator.”

Trump says political violence ‘is never accepted’

When asked if he rejects political violence, Trump replied that it "is never accepted" but noticeably avoided bringing up the Jan 6, 2021 insurrection that occurred during his presidency as he and his supporters attempted to overturn the 2020 election results.

"I'm the one that had very little of it," the former president said of political violence, explaining, "Take a look at wars, I wasn't involved in wars. We beat the hell out of ISIS. We won 100%."

Further, during the event, a Trump supporter in the audience asked a question, stating that friends predicted trouble during his second term.

The former President then replied, “We have chaos today. Look at today with Hunter Biden going to Congress and sitting down in Congress.”

In addition, Trump abandoned his intentions for "retribution" even though he had promised hours earlier to pursue his opponents and had used the phrase in a fundraising plea.

He initially said, "A lot of people would say that's not so bad," when asked about retaliation. He then brought up old grievances, like as the Russia investigation and the censorship-related FBI Twitter fiasco, according to Daily Mail.

Internet reacts to Trump’s claims

Trump’s claims have garnered immense social media attention, with users slamming him for retracting his earlier claim that he would be a dictator on the first day of his second term.

‘Trump always be lying,” one user slammed. “Of course, he's not. He still wants to be called president. He'll just *act* like a dictator,” another mocked.

“He already said the quiet part out loud, plus he is a LIAR so WHY should we belie?e him. He has lied to us so many(30,000+) times!!!” a third user mocked while the fourth said, “Why does he keep saying this? This makes sense to some people? 🤷🏼‍♂️”

“I don’t recall him saying “I want to be a dictator FOR INE DAY”, I thought he said “ON DAY ONE” another stated. “What country is he talking about that was coming together? I like to know. What I do know, is he divided the country,” a user said.
