BROOKLYN, NEW YORK: A man with unexplained gunshot wounds on his hands has been arrested in connection with the murder of a Brooklyn bodega worker after the NYPD's Warrant Squad located him in Brooklyn on Wednesday morning, March 6.
Daquan David, 29, now faces charges of murder of Nazim Berry and criminal possession of a weapon while the victim's mother demands life imprisonment.
Berry's grief-stricken mother, Danette Hollie, expressing a desire for justice stated "I want them to throw away the key... I don't want him to have no bail. He had enough time to think about his life and Nazim's life, and what he was about to cause, and he still decided to make that choice. So he needs to pay with his life," per New York Post.
Inside Brooklyn bodega clerk murder case
Sources reveal that David, who has been uncooperative with detectives, was found with gunshot wounds on his hands upon arrest. While it remains unclear how he sustained these injuries, sources clarify that they were not inflicted by the police, and the suspect was subsequently transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
The alleged incident unfolded on February 26 outside Amin Deli in Crown Heights when David allegedly gunned down Berry following a dispute over a $2 Black and Mild cigar.
The victim's mother, Danette, shared details of the tragic confrontation, explaining that the perpetrator, demanding the cigar without payment, returned to the bodega armed and engaged in a fatal altercation with Berry, ultimately shooting him in the head.
Beloved clerk succumbs to injuries amidst wave of violence in Crown Heights
The victim, Berry, was rushed to Kings County Hospital Center but, tragically, could not be saved. The bodega clerk was described as someone who "didn't use to bother anyone" while stocking shelves and maintaining the store's exterior.
This incident occurred just days before two other individuals were shot dead in separate attacks in Crown Heights. Adding to the gravity of the situation, David, the accused killer, had a prior arrest in July 2013 for criminal possession of a weapon, according to police sources.
The United Bodegas of America, offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest, advocates for the suspect's sentencing to life in prison.
