HOUSTON, TEXAS: On Sunday, March 17, a toddler, who had just finished a trip, was inadvertently struck by the driver, Muhammad Khan, as the child walked in front of a parked Uber vehicle.

The heartbreaking incident occurred at approximately 1 pm at an apartment complex on Waverly Drive in Houston.

Witnesses to tragic accident reportedly assault Uber driver

As two children and two adults were being dropped off by an Uber, tragedy unfolded when the toddler walked in front of the vehicle and was struck by Khan as the passengers exited the silver Volkswagen Atlas.

Efforts to free the child from under the vehicle faced obstacles as witnesses to the incident, including passengers from the Uber, reportedly assaulted Khan.

Despite Khan's efforts to help, the situation escalated, leading to his hospitalization with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident, including the assault on Khan, but no charges or arrests have been made at this time.

One neighbor, who witnessed the accident, recounted rushing to aid the child and transporting her to the hospital in his own vehicle.

Surveillance footage captured the harrowing moments leading up to the tragedy, illustrating the sequence of events that culminated in the toddler's untimely death.

"Mr Khan stopped the vehicle, but the juvenile was stuck under the left rear tire. Mr Khan attempted to move the vehicle but was unsuccessful due to all parties assaulting him and pulling him from the vehicle," the Harris County Sheriff's Office said, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Uber extends sympathy in toddler's tragic death

Heartfelt condolences flooded in from the community and Uber, expressing profound sympathy for the victim's family.

"The details of what's been reported are heartbreaking, and our thoughts go out to the victim's family," the company stated.

Additionally, Uber declared the suspension of Khan's access to the platform pending the investigation.

The toddler, who was just two months away from her second birthday, tragically died from her injuries an hour after the incident. "It's just an unfortunate tragedy at this point," stated Lt K Benoit.

"We as parents, relatives, custodians of children, we have to be a lot more alert, hold their hand, guide them to a safe place and then watch the driver pull away," he added.

However, the sheriff's office stated that Khan exhibited no signs of impairment and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
