Hillary Clinton calls Trump administration’s Ukraine stance ‘disgraceful’
MUNICH, GERMANY: Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sharply criticized the Trump administration’s approach to the war in Ukraine, calling it ‘disgraceful’ and accusing President Donald Trump of pushing a deal that would force Ukraine into what she described as a surrender.
Clinton made the remarks while discussing the ongoing conflict and US policy toward Kyiv, arguing that Trump’s stance represents a major break from past American foreign policy priorities.
Hillary Clinton calls Trump Ukraine stance ‘disgraceful’
“I think that the Trump administration’s position toward Ukraine is disgraceful,” Clinton said. “I think the effort to force Ukraine into a surrender deal with Putin is shameful.”
She went further, claiming that efforts to negotiate an end to the war amount to pressuring Ukraine into giving in to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Clinton also accused Trump and Putin of attempting to ‘profit’ from the war, describing it as a “historic error” and alleging corruption.
“I think the effort that Putin and Trump are making to profit off the misery and death of the Ukrainian people is a historic error… and corrupt” she said.
Hillary Clinton says Ukraine fight defends democracy
Clinton framed Ukraine’s defense against Russia as a fight tied directly to American democracy and Western civilization. “I believe Ukraine is fighting for our democracy and our values of freedom and civilization,” she said.
“On the front lines losing thousands of people and having their country destroyed by one man's mania to control them and I think Trump either doesn't understand or could care less about that suffering.”
Clinton also described the conflict as being driven by “one man’s mania to control them.” Her comments echo a long-running argument among Democrats and many establishment Republicans that the US has a strategic and moral obligation to continue supporting Ukraine militarily and financially.
Trump, who has argued for a more aggressive push toward negotiations, has repeatedly said he wants the war ended and has criticized the scale of US spending abroad.
The administration’s supporters argue that ending the conflict would save lives, reduce global instability, and prevent American taxpayers from footing an open-ended bill. Critics, including Clinton, have argued that any deal perceived as rewarding Russia could set a dangerous precedent and weaken US credibility with allies.
Clinton also claimed Trump either does not understand the suffering in Ukraine or “could care less” about it. “I think Trump either doesn’t understand or could care less about that suffering,” she said.
