WASHINGTON, DC: Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sharply criticized President Donald Trump over his recent social media activity and remarks surrounding Easter, as well as his escalating rhetoric toward Iran.
Her comments came during a fragile ceasefire following weeks of intense conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Speaking on MS NOW’s 'Morning Joe' on Monday, April 13, she raised concerns about leadership accountability and the broader implications of presidential language.
Hillary Clinton criticizes Trump’s rhetoric and conduct on Iran War
Clinton responded to a question about what was described by the host's as “profane posts” by Trump during Easter. The reporter referenced president's message, which included threats toward a Iranian civilization and a post depicting himself as Jesus.
She responded firmly, emphasizing the importance of accountability, “We need to hold leaders accountable for what they say as well as what they do. Because words, especially from an American president, have real consequences.”
Clinton described Trump’s recent social media activity as “unhinged rants” and called it “disgraceful,” pointing specifically to threats of “civilizational genocide” and remarks she said targeted values and even “Pope Leo.”
She expanded her criticism by addressing Trump’s repeated references to “Western civilization.” Clinton argued that the concept has deep historical meaning tied to values and institutions, adding that she had studied it during her time at Wellesley College.
According to her, Western civilization represents systems that ensure leaders are held accountable and prevent them from becoming “autocrats and dictators” or leading nations into “reckless wars.” Clinton stressed that accountability extends beyond legal violations.
It includes adherence to democratic norms, respect for institutions, and responsible conduct. She stated that these norms “have been broken by this president,” adding that reading his statements left her “shaking my head” and “feeling sick at heart.” She concluded by criticizing Trump’s admiration for figures like Vladimir Putin, saying such leaders aim to undermine the very values Trump claims to defend.
Trump’s Iran threats and Hillary Clinton’s criticism of diplomacy efforts
Previously Trump, escalated tensions with Iran by warning that a “whole civilization” could be destroyed if Iranian officials failed to meet his deadline for a deal to end the war. “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will,” he said, while also suggesting that “complete and total regime change” could lead to a more positive outcome.
He described the moment as “one of most important moments in the long and complex history of the world” and claimed that decades of “extortion, corruption, and death” under Iran’s regime could come to an end.
Clinton also criticized the Trump administration’s diplomatic approach. She pointed to failed negotiations involving Vice President JD Vance, White House Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, who left Pakistan without reaching an agreement with Iranian officials.
Clinton said, “This is hard work, You don’t just show up in Geneva or Islamabad, talk for a bunch of hours, and go away. This is hard, disciplined effort that has to go into diplomacy to reach any results.”
“And I don’t see this administration either wanting to do it or, frankly, being capable of doing it because they send the same three people around the world — two of them, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, they’re supposed to solve Ukraine, Iran, Gaza — it’s a joke,” she continued.
