Hillary Clinton says Melania Trump reminded her of a ‘little kid’ at rare gathering of former first ladies
WASHINGTON, DC: Hillary Clinton remembered Melania Trump as looking like a "little kid" when they last met at the memorial service of former first lady Rosalynn Carter, in her newly released book.
Titled, 'Something Lost, Something Gained,' the book was published by Simon & Schuster and became available for sale on Tuesday, September 17, according to the Daily Mail.
"'In Something Lost, Something Gained', Hillary offers her candid views on life and love, politics, liberty, democracy, the threats we face, and the future within our reach," reads the book description on the publisher's website.
Hillary Clinton's last encounter with Melania Trump
Hillary Clinton and Melania Trump came together at a gathering of former and incumbent presidents and first ladies when Rosalynn Carter, wife of the oldest living former POTUS Jimmy Carter was laid to rest in November 2023.
"Melania had a look on her face – very smiley but uncertain – that reminded me of the little kid at the birthday party who doesn't know anyone and is waiting at the edge of the circle, hoping people are going to be nice," Clinton shared in her book.
The former US Secretary of State claimed to be unaware of the fact that Trump would be present at the service, noting, "If anybody at the White House or on Bill's or my Secret Service detail had been briefed on Mrs Trump's plan to attend, they didn't tell me."
While her husband Donald Trump had consistently been critical of all members of the exclusive club, Clinton claimed that Melania Trump was treated nicely by all. She first noticed her chatting with Laura Bush in the waiting area.
"We all went up to her," Clinton shared, referring to the group of first ladies.
"Jill (Biden) air-kissed her cheek, and Michelle Obama gave her one of her signature big hugs."
Bill Clinton, who was in attendance, "tried to make conversation, asking her how she was, but he was met with a smile and few words. I reached out, shook her hand, and said, 'Hello, Melania, it's nice to see you.'"
"I can appreciate how awkward it must have been, not knowing what kind of reception she would get after all her husband's insults directed at us Bushes, Bidens, Obamas, and Clintons alike," Clinton added.
Internet defends Melania Trump
Netizens reacting to Hillary Clinton's revelations about Melania Trump on the Daily Mail website slammed her for making uncalled judgments and praised the latter for keeping her distance. The following examples demonstrate their takes.
"It is strange to me that Mrs Clinton would make these revelations about Mrs Trump's behavior without any thoughts to cause or possible introspection. Melania was never a politician, but was relentlessly attacked by the left for being married to President Trump... (and) she did an exemplary job of staying out of politics," wrote a person.
"Melania knew she was surrounded by sharks ready to pounce. She kept her distance," shared another.
"Mrs Trump was there to honor Mrs Carter. She wasn’t there for Hillary’s high school bullying," noted a third.
"Melania is a confident woman. She knows who she is. She doesn't seek the applause and approval of others," commented a fourth.
"Melania is going to be criticized no matter what she does or doesn't do," quipped a fifth.
