CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: Bill Clinton gave an emotional speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) on Wednesday night, August 21— reflecting on mortality, his political career, and the state of the union.

The former president, 78, spoke with a noticeably raspy voice and his hands trembling, sparking concerns about his health.

Bill Clinton attacks Donald Trump's age in DNC speech

Bill Clinton, who served as a warm-up speaker for Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, former House speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, began his speech by acknowledging his age and the uncertainty of his future appearances.

“I want to say this from the bottom of my heart, I have no idea how many more of these I’ll be able to come to. I started in ’76 and I’ve been everyone since — no, ’72. Lord, I’m getting old,” he began.

Clinton later quipped, “The only personal vanity I want to assert is I’m still younger than Donald Trump." It's worth noting that Trump recently turned 78.

Clinton's remarks were met with applause, but they did little to quell the worries of those watching—many of whom took to social media to comment on his apparent deterioration.

"Clinton has shaky hands as he speaks. He should join Joe and go to the nursing home," one social media user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

"Sometimes he looks dead sometimes he doesn't," another wrote.

"He's a walking corpse," someone else offered.

"Bill Clinton says he’s younger than Trump, Bill Clinton might be younger but he surely looks older and weaker than Trump. Trump is stronger and healthier than Bill Clinton," read one comment.

"He looks like he’s almost 90. He calls her Kam a la too. Omg," another added.

Bill Clinton praises Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz

In his speech, Bill Clinton also took the time to praise President Joe Biden, who was absent from the convention as he was reportedly vacationing at a donor’s $37 million California ranch, the New York Post reported.

“I want to thank him for his courage, compassion, his class, his service, his sacrifice,” the ex-president said. “He kept the faith and he’s infected a lot of the rest of us.”

However, Clinton’s comments subtly acknowledged the relief within the Democratic Party at being free from Biden’s declining poll numbers. He said party members were “happy” because “we feel like a load is off our shoulders.”

Clinton also spoke about the Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, whose first name he mispronounced several times during his speech. He praised both Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as “two leaders with all American but still improbable life stories, it can only happen here. Their careers, after all, started in community, courtrooms, and classrooms."

In a lighter moment, Clinton—known for his love of fast food—joked about Harris’ former job at McDonald’s. “I’ll be so happy when she actually enters the White House as president because she will break my record as the president who spent the most time at McDonald’s," he quipped.

Clinton didn't conclude his speech without taking some potshots at former president Donald Trump, whom he described as vain and “a good actor.”

“He’s like one of those tenors opening up before he walks out on stage like I did, trying to get his lungs open by singing, ‘me, me, me, me’,” Clinton said of Trump. “We’ve seen more than one election slip away from us when we thought it couldn’t happen — when people got distracted by phony issues or overconfident.”

Bill Clinton’s ongoing health issues

The tremors in Bill Clinton’s hands during his speech have reignited speculation about his health. There have been whispers since the 2016 Democratic National Convention when similar tremors were observed. At that time, some theorized that Clinton might be suffering from Parkinson’s disease—a common progressive nervous system disorder.

However, medical experts noted that his tremors did not exhibit the typical characteristics of Parkinson’s, such as the “pill-rolling” tremor and associated rigidity, changes in gait, and speech. Instead, Clinton was suggested to have an “essential tremor,” a benign condition that often accompanies aging and is most noticeable with movement.

In 2022, however, when Clinton spoke at a rally for New York Congressional Democrat Josh Riley, his tremors had become more pronounced. His left hand particularly exhibited the “pill-rolling” qualities more typical of Parkinson’s. This led to further speculation about his health, albeit Clinton himself has downplayed these concerns.

In a conversation with CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent, Sanjay Gupta, Clinton admitted that he had initially feared he might have Parkinson’s disease but was relieved when doctors ruled it out. He described his tremors as a “normal aging phenomenon,” but his recent appearances have only fueled concerns about his health.

Furthermore, some observers have also noted involuntary jaw movements—known as oromandibular dystonia—which could indicate a neurological disorder or be a side effect of medication.
