GOP issues criminal referrals for James and Hunter Biden for lying to Congress but internet is unimpressed

WASHINGTON, DC: The House Republicans issued criminal referrals against President Joe Biden's brother, James Biden, and the first son, Hunter Biden, blaming them for lying to Congress. On June 5, the House Oversight and Accountability, Judiciary, and Ways and Means committees sent a joint letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Justice Department's special counsel David Weiss recommending charges against the Bidens for making false statements in relation to the GOP's impeachment inquiry against the president, as per CBS News.

"Hunter Biden and James Biden made provably false statements to the Oversight Committee and the Judiciary Committee about key aspects of the impeachment inquiry, in what appears to be a conscious effort to hinder the investigation's focus on President Joe Biden," wrote James Comer, Jim Jordan, Jason Smith, the chairmen of the three House Committees.

The House GOP move came as the gun trial against Hunter started on June 3 in Delaware and less than a week after the conviction of Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump in the New York hush-money case.

Criminal referrals arose from James and Hunter Biden's depositions

The House Committee's criminal referrals against James and Hunter resulted from the hours-long depositions both gave to Oversight and Judiciary committees in February about the impeachment probe into President Biden.

The GOP lawmakers argued the first son, during his February 28 closed-door deposition, denied his affiliation with the Rosemont Seneca Bohai, LLC, and "falsely distanced himself" from the company.

The committees claimed they had documents to prove Hunter served as the company's corporate secretary. In addition, they accused the president's son of narrating an "entirely fictitious account" about his father's presence while he drafted text messages to a Chinese business partner.

The criminal defense against James arose from his alleged denial of the then-former vice president's 2017 meeting with him, Hunter, and Hunter's business associates. Republicans argued the president's brother's denial of the meeting was contradicted by Hunter and his business partner Tony Bobulinski.

"The nature of these false statements is not lost on the Committees: every instance implicates Joe Biden's knowledge of and role in his family's influence peddling," Comer, Jordan, and Smith said in the letter.

Hunter's attorney, Abbe Lowell, denounced the GOP move as "nothing more than a desperate attempt by Republicans to twist Hunter's testimony so they can distract from their failed impeachment inquiry and interfere with his trial," according to NBC News.

The Republican-led lower chamber has been investigating the president's involvement in the Biden family business for over a year; however, the impeachment probe formalized in December 2023 has not made any relevant progress so far.

Slamming House Republicans' move to issue criminal referrals against Hunter and James, netizens suggested the lawmakers focus on critical issues like inflation and the economy.

One user asked,"So this is basically just another strongly worded letter, right?" Another said, "GOP method. Acquit our guy when there’s a mountain of evidence. Impeach their guy without any evidence."

"This is so cute. You’ve issued criminal referrals to the DOJ 'recommending' Hunter and James Biden be charged with making false statements to Congress. You can issue whatever you want. This means nothing. Nothing will come of this lol. House Republicans are pathetic," added a third user.

A fourth response read, "Oh Lord, here we go again round and round. Just wondering does anyone work Congress work for the people that elected you all? In other words, WHAT ABOUT US???!!! My God! You guys just go after each other and leave us out to dry. Unbelievable!"

Another outraged person wrote, "Great! All these tit for tat investigations are really gonna help bring down inflation and boost the economy!!!"

"Just grateful House Republicans are hard at work sending DOJ referrals on James and Hunter Biden. It's lowered gas prices in my area by 15 per cent," someone else fumed.

Meanwhile, an individual said, "Your 'strong words' are useless. They are ineffective."

Another user added, "Stop Wasting taxpayer money on your continued clown show chasing a nothing burger down the rabbit hole. You're pathetic already. The Do Nothing MAGA!"
