WASHINGTON, DC: The White House declined the House Oversight Committee's invitation for President Joe Biden to testify in a GOP-led impeachment inquiry hearing against him, CNN reports.

"Your impeachment investigation is over," Richard Sauber, the president's special counsel, wrote in a letter to House Oversight Chair James Comer on Monday, April 15. "We decline your invitation for President Biden to testify."

The letter called out the impeachment probe against the 81-year-old incumbent, led by Comer and House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, for failing to find evidence to prove any wrongdoing by the president.

"Your Committee's purported 'impeachment inquiry' has succeeded only in turning up abundant evidence that, in fact, the President has done nothing wrong," Sauber said in the letter, according to The Hill.

"Yet rather than acknowledge this reality, your March 28, 2024, letter contains the same litany of false allegations that have been repeatedly debunked and refuted by the very witnesses you have called before your Committee and the many documents you have obtained," he continued.

Biden's special counsel also criticized the committee's insistence on supporting the false allegations despite the evidence against it, stating the "facts do not matter" to them.

Comer's letter to Biden, sent in March, includes uncertain claims to link the president to his family's business dealings, including his involvement in son Hunter Biden's overseas business in Ukraine. In February, the FBI indicted a confidential source for making false allegations about Biden accepting a bribe from Ukrainian energy company Burisma.

James Comer slams Joe Biden

"The apple doesn't fall far from the tree in the Biden family. Like his son, Hunter Biden, President Biden is refusing to testify in public about Biden's corrupt influence peddling," Comer lashed out at the president's refusal to testify before the committee, citing the first son's declination to a public hearing after a closed-door testimony.

He accused Biden of being unwilling to answer the "straightforward" questions in the invitation.

Due to its other priorities, the Biden impeachment probe was in the back seat at the Republican-controlled House in recent weeks.

The lack of conclusive evidence to hold the president guilty after months of investigation has put the inquiry close to a dead end. For instance, GOP Rep Don Bacon recently revealed the committee was "probably nearing the conclusion of this investigation," and the investigators did not find a "specific crime that's been committed."

Internet debates Joe Biden's decision not to testify in impeachment inquiry

On social media, there were mixed reactions to Biden’s decision not to testify. Some praised the President, while others argued that there wasn’t enough evidence to proceed with the investigation. One group called for the House GOP to subpoena Biden.

One user wrote, "Show some sort of evidence and you’ll get him to testify. Him testifying now shows guilt without evidence. That’s not how it works." While another remarked, "Force him. They forced Trump."

"Why should he waste more taxpayers money on this sham? If they don’t have the evidence yet, it’s not there," a third user added. On the other hand, someone else urged, "Send a subpoena already."

A fifth response read, "President Biden isn't under any obligation to do so!" Whereas another wrote, "Your invitation Comer is worthless. It’s subpoena time."

"Why should Biden testify, they do not have anything against him, they are just fishing to try and save Trump," an individual argued. While a remark read, "Send him a subpoena and then arrest him when he doesn’t comply."
