WASHINGTON, DC: House Republicans have called upon President Joe Biden to testify before the Oversight Committee as part of their impeachment inquiry.

This request is based on contentious claims regarding the 81-year-old incumbent president's family business dealings, according to The Hill.

House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky) wrote in a letter to the Commander-in-Chief, “I invite you to participate in a public hearing at which you will be afforded the opportunity to explain, under oath, your involvement with your family’s sources of income and the means it has used to generate it.”

The Republicans have urged the President to answer questions regarding this matter and the letter invited him to appear before them on April 16.

What will be President Joe Biden’s response to House GOP’s correspondence?

The request for a US President to appear before Congress is an unusual one, as they typically only present the State of the Union address before Congress once a year.

House Republicans, meanwhile, are facing difficulties in concluding their investigation into Biden's impeachment.

Despite doubts within their party about the existence of any wrongdoing, Rep James Comer has considered drafting a criminal referral to the Justice Department instead of pursuing an impeachment vote in the House, which would require identifying high crimes and misdemeanors.

The White House has dismissed the idea, and during a hearing in which the president's son declined to appear, Comer suggested that he would extend an invitation to the president.

However, officials have cited numerous depositions that have contradicted the testimony highlighted by the GOP.

Ian Sams, White House spokesperson for Oversight and Investigations, wrote on social media, “Comer knows 20+ witnesses have testified that POTUS did nothing wrong. He knows that the hundreds of thousands of pages of records he’s received have refuted his false allegations. This is a sad stunt at the end of a dead impeachment.”

What does James Comer’s letter to the President attempt to salvage?

The letter in question seeks to establish a direct link between President Joe Biden and his family's business dealings and relies on several questionable claims to do so.

It alleges that then-Vice President Biden, with the support of the international community, worked to remove a Ukrainian prosecutor who had failed to address corruption and that US aid was withheld until this transpired.

Republicans assert that the White House has not provided documentation to support this foreign policy stance, but such documents and State Department correspondence were provided during a previous Senate investigation.

Furthermore, the letter from Comer makes a false claim that the prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, was investigating Burisma, the Ukrainian energy company where Hunter Biden served on the board.

However, Shokin's deputy stated that the investigation into the company had ceased before then-Vice President Biden's intervention, casting doubt on the notion that Shokin's dismissal would have aided Burisma or Hunter Biden.

Despite this, the letter indicates that the matter remains a point of interest for Republicans, even following the Justice Department's shocking indictment of a former FBI informant on charges of misleading the agency by alleging that President Joe Biden had received a bribe in association with his work.

The letter also states that Republicans want to know more about the alleged "$24 million that has flowed from foreign sources to you, your family, and their business associates. The Committee has identified no legitimate services to merit such lucrative payments.”

A fact-check conducted by The Washington Post revealed that only a fraction of the funds in question were received by Hunter Biden, amounting to approximately $7 million, along with a few of his relatives. This sum was not transferred to his father, President Joe Biden.

The majority of the funds were reportedly paid to business associates and not the Biden family.

In addition, the letter addressed to President Biden raised concerns about loans he had given to his brother and requested evidence of the underlying loans.

However, bank records obtained by the committee indicated that the President's account issued checks to his brother, which were later reimbursed for the same amount.

The letter also highlighted President Biden's interactions with Hunter Biden's associates. It mentioned a meeting with a Chinese associate and brought attention to Hunter Biden's habit of answering his father's phone calls via speakerphone.

House Oversight Democrats said in a statement, “The GOP couldn’t find an impeachable offense, the evidence has been comically distorted and twisted, and now even right-wing media is calling out all the acrobatic contortions and comic evasions.”

“The GOP impeachment inquiry has been a circus. Time to fold up the tent,” they stated in conclusion.

Finally, this user tweeted: "They know it's not going to happen and are just doing this to get a refusal from the WH so they can talk about him not wanting to testify."
