WASHINGTON, DC: The White House and leading Democrats fiercely opposed a bill the House adopted on Wednesday, July 10, requiring proof of US citizenship before registering to vote, according to the New York Post.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act was passed with the support of 216 Republicans and five Democrats. Among those who crossed party lines were swing-district representatives Reps Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas), Jared Golden (D-Maine), Don Davis (D-NC), and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash). Notably, 198 Democrats opposed the bill.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La) said in a statement, "Today 198 House Democrats voted against preventing illegal aliens from voting in American elections. Over the past four years, Joe Biden has welcomed millions upon millions of illegals into the country knowing that noncitizens only have to check a box to vote in a federal election."

Johnson added, "We have long known this was an intentional effort to turn them into voters, and now the American people know where every member of Congress stands on this critically important issue."

He further stated, "House Republicans believe that only Americans should vote in American elections. House Democrats have now proven they believe that illegal aliens should vote in American elections."

Republicans allege thousands of people have attempted to vote in federal elections even though it is unlawful for non-US citizens to do so.

Hakeem Jeffries, the minority leader in the house (D-NY), whipped his caucus against the 'extreme MAGA Republican voter suppression bill', and claimed, "There is no evidence that has been presented to suggest that undocumented individuals have been participating in federal elections."

The bill is unlikely to pass the Democratic-majority Senate.

Moreover, on Monday, July 8, the White House threatened to reject the measure as well. The White House Office of Management and Budget said in a statement, "It is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in Federal elections—it is a Federal crime punishable by prison and fines."

It further read, "Additionally, making a false claim of citizenship or unlawfully voting in an election is punishable by removal from the United States and a permanent bar to admission. This bill would do nothing to safeguard our elections, but it would make it much harder for all eligible Americans to register to vote and increase the risk that eligible voters are purged from voter rolls."

Although left-leaning organizations such as the Campaign Legal Center have downplayed worries over the voter registration loophole's potential to influence elections, conservatives have not changed their minds.

The bill's patron, Representative Chip Roy (R-Texas), told reporters on Tuesday, July 9, that the notion that it would deny US citizens their right to vote was 'hogwash'.

Roy said, "We’ve seen that Democrats are now trying to abuse this. And you’ve got, you know, in Oakland, and San Francisco and New York and DC and all across the country — Democrats are pushing to allow non-citizens to vote."

Internet grills Dems as they oppose House bill requiring proof of citizenship when registering to vote

A user wrote on X, "What a concept. No way it passes the senate though", while another added, "198 traitors voted against it."

A person also stated, "Now I wonder why so many democrats voted against this?" whereas one mentioned, "Good. Why every member of congress did not vote for this is mind boggling."

A user also stated, "Even if it passes the Senate our Loser in Chief will veto it."
