WASHINGTON, DC: House Speaker Mike Johnson shared a joint statement with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, and House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, to mark one year since the passing of the HR2 bill in the House of Representatives on Saturday, May 11.

Also known as Secure the Border Act of 2023, the HR2 bill addresses issues regarding immigration and border security and has been held up in the Democrat-controlled Senate since passing through Congress. It was introduced last year to address the worsening border crisis under the Biden administration.

According to the website of the Congress, HR2 "makes various changes to immigration law, including by imposing limits on asylum eligibility and requiring employers to use an electronic system to verify the employment eligibility of new employees."

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Johnson shared, "Over the past three and a half years, President Biden has ceded operational control of the southern border to drug cartels and has welcomed untold millions of inadmissible aliens into our country."

The joint statement claimed, "Because of Biden‘s policies, traffickers, smugglers, persons on the terrorism watchlist, and other dangerous criminals are now crossing our border every day. Meanwhile, fentanyl poisoning has become a leading cause of death in America, and our own innocent citizens, such as Laken Riley, have been murdered by violent criminals who the Biden Administration released."

"Last year, House Republicans acted to stop the madness by passing the Secure the Border Act, which would increase the number of border patrol agents, resume construction of the border wall, end Biden’s policy of catch-and-release, stop Mayorkas’ abuse of CBP One, and ban taxpayer funds from flowing to NGOs moving illegal aliens around the country," continued the declaration, before shifting gears to slam the Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

It further said, "For an entire year, Senator Schumer has refused to consider our legislation for a vote, allowing this catastrophe to continue unabated. It is wrong and it is costing American lives every day. On this anniversary, we demand the Senate bring H.R. 2 up for a vote."

"The American people deserve a government that actually cares about their safety and security, and will uphold the rule of law," stressed the House Republicans.

Internet reacts to Speaker Mike Johnson's post

One remarked, "Why do you keep railing on Biden? You are the problem. You had all the control, all the power, to give your constituents what you promised. We still have 87,000 IRS agents and we still have a wide-open border."

Another said, "And you keep funding this BS. Secure the border and stop giving money to Ukraine," and a person echoed, "And you’ve financed it every step of the way! You own it too!"

"The border problem is 100% on your shoulders. You could have fixed it, but you decided not to. Vacate the Chair," stated someone else.

One more expressed, "And you and your RINO ilk have just let it all happen. You, YOU had the tools to stop it and YOU didn't. You own this 100%."
