JAMAICA BAY, NEW YORK: A human head was discovered floating in Jamaica Bay on Tuesday, May 7, prompting investigators to delve into a disturbing connection with a headless body found in the same waters just weeks ago.
The unsettling discovery unfolded around 10.10 am along Cross Bay Boulevard near 165th Avenue in Howard Beach, drawing an immediate response from the NYPD's Harbor Unit, according to authorities.
Investigation links severed head to Lukasz Mikolajewicz's discovered remains
Authorities are now piecing together whether the severed head may be linked to Lukasz Mikolajewicz, a 46-year-old resident of Ozone Park, whose remains were stumbled upon by a couple fishing along the shore on April 12, reported New York Post.
Mikolajewicz's headless body was recovered approximately 600 yards west from the beginning of the Cross Bay Bridge, shedding light on a perplexing case. Notably, officials claimed that this was the fourth time a body was found in the area since November 2023.
Authorities left baffled after Lukasz Mikolajewicz figure matches security footage
While the city Medical Examiner's office has classified Mikolajewicz's death as suicide, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny disclosed that security footage captured a figure clad in black attire venturing onto the bridge solo before vanishing from sight.
“The body that we recovered is headless but wearing the same clothes as the male that was walking on the bridge,” Chief Kenny remarked. “When we go to the location where we lose sight of him, we find a green rope that was tied onto a metal railing."
Although how the individual died was not immediately apparent, police stated that the "theory is that he hanged himself" and that his body fell into the water. Amidst the unfolding investigation, DNA testing, spearheaded by the ME's office, aims to ascertain any potential correlation between the recent findings, authorities affirmed.
