Ilhan Omar takes dig at Trump in July 4 video, redefines patriotism beyond 'loyalty to leaders'
WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Ilhan Omar marked Independence Day on Saturday, July 4, with a politically charged video that quickly drew attention online, arguing that patriotism is rooted in defending the Constitution rather than showing loyalty to any administration.
Without naming President Donald Trump directly, the Minnesota Democrat urged Americans to remain vigilant, embrace criticism of those in power, and continue striving toward what she described as the country's founding promise of liberty and justice for all.
Proud to be an American.

True patriotism is defending the Constitution, protecting our democracy, and striving for liberty and justice for all.
Our country has never been perfect, but its promise is worth protecting.

Ilhan Omar redefines patriotism
Omar posted the video on X on July 4 alongside the caption: "Proud to be an American. True patriotism is defending the Constitution, protecting our democracy, and striving for liberty and justice for all. Our country has never been perfect, but its promise is worth protecting."
In the nearly two-minute video, Omar said she believes deeply in America's founding ideals and insisted that patriotism should not be measured by unwavering support for those in office.
"It is really important for people to stay vigilant," she said before arguing that patriotism is not about "fully believing in a particular administration."
Instead, she described what she considers "true patriotism" as fighting for the country's dignity while protecting both its citizens and the Constitution.
Although Trump was never mentioned by name, Omar's remarks were widely interpreted as criticism of the current administration.
She argued that every major step forward in American history happened because citizens demanded change rather than remaining silent.
According to Omar, Americans should never be discouraged from expecting more from their government. "In a country that lives by a Constitution that protects the right to free speech, you should be able to criticize your president," she said.
She added that citizens should also be able to hold presidents accountable without being viewed as unpatriotic.
Ilhan Omar speaks for immigrants
Omar also used the video to speak about immigration, drawing on her own experience as a refugee who later became one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress.
She said immigrants, whether newly arrived or descended from earlier generations, share similar aspirations.
"This country gave us hope," Omar said, adding that Americans should not "look down on the next person that's trying to do that."
She argued that the United States allowed many immigrants to build new lives and develop their own identities.
The video concluded with a few lines from John Denver's classic 'Take Me Home, Country Roads' playing in the background.
