MESA, ARIZONA: Mesa Mayor John Giles, a Republican, has announced his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the upcoming presidential elections, highlighting her contributions to Arizona's economy and his opposition to former president Donald Trump.

Giles' endorsement comes from a key swing state, Arizona, which could play a crucial role in the upcoming election.

Mayor John Giles highlights Biden-Harris administration's investments in Arizona

John Giles, who has served as the mayor of Mesa since 2014, praised the Biden-Harris administration for its investments in the state and expressed his concerns about Donald Trump's impact on the Republican Party and the nation.

"Under the Biden-Harris administration, Mesa has seen historic federal funding for the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, along with investments to make sure our streets and public transit systems benefit from modern technology," Giles wrote in an op-ed published in the Arizona Republic.

The mayor also mentioned the impact of the CHIPS Act, noting that "Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden are delivering thousands of new jobs to Arizonans and helping us grow critical industries."

Giles urged Republicans to reject Trump at the ballot box, suggesting the need for the party to return to its core values.

"Our party used to stand for the belief that every Arizonan, no matter their background or circumstances, should have the freedom, opportunity and security to live out their American Dream," he wrote.

"But since Donald Trump refused to accept the outcome of the 2020 election, Republicans have yet to course correct," he added.

Mayor John Giles warns of 'felon' Donald Trump’s threat to Democracy

John Giles expressed his concerns about Donald Trump's leadership and its implications for the country.

"The Republican Party with Trump at its helm continues down the path of political extremism, away from focusing on our fundamental freedoms," he penned.

He criticized Trump's stance on NATO and his legal issues, stating, "Trump poses a serious threat to our nation. We can’t have a felon representing us on the national stage, let alone one who would threaten to abandon NATO and ruin our standing abroad."

Giles stressed the importance of defending democratic institutions and civil rights. "We are in a moment that only happens once every few generations, when we have to defend democracy, and stand up for the right to vote and our civil rights," he wrote.

"It is essential that we proceed in a manner that strengthens, rather than diminishes, public confidence in our democratic institutions," he added.

Mayor John Giles praises Kamala Harris and Mark Kelly for leadership

John Giles reflected on the legacy of the late Senator John McCain, calling for leaders who can work across the aisle.

"And it’s that same high caliber of character and leadership I see in Vice President Harris," he wrote.

He also praised Senator Mark Kelly, who is reported to be among those under consideration to be Harris’ vice presidential nominee.

The Arizona mayor believes Harris is the candidate who will "put country over party" and fight for the rights and safety of Americans.

He contrasted her with Trump, warning that the GOP nominee "could enact the extreme and dangerous Project 2025 agenda if elected, which would roll back our rights and freedoms."

Giles concluded by stressing the rejection of "crudeness and vulgarity of Trump and JD Vance and the far-right agenda they would champion."

Internet reacts to Mayor John Giles' endorsement of Kamala Harris

John Giles' endorsement has sparked a range of reactions on social media.

"Country over party. Mesa Mayor Giles consistently demonstrates integrity in his decisions," wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter).

Another commented, "Smart, I am amazed..."

"Takes guts but everyone should choose country over party!" said another. One more wrote, "Whoa. I'm genuinely shocked."
