WASHINGTON, DC: In a bold and candid statement, Senator Chris Murphy has accused the Supreme Court of being "brazenly corrupt and brazenly political," echoing President Joe Biden’s concerns about the court’s integrity, as per The Hill.

Appearing on CNN’s 'State of the Union,' Murphy was asked about Biden’s recent comments, in which he described the Supreme Court as "out of kilter" during a fundraiser. Murphy firmly defended the president’s stance, asserting that it was crucial for Biden to voice these concerns publicly.

"I think it would be irresponsible for the president not to talk about the fact that this court is becoming brazenly corrupt and brazenly political. And it’s up to the American people, this election, to do something about that," Murphy stated.

He also called on Congress to act swiftly and implement a code of ethical conduct for the Supreme Court to curb its growing politicization.

The interview took place amid rising calls for Justice Samuel Alito to recuse himself from cases linked to the January 6 Capitol attack and the 2020 presidential election.

These calls were a result of by reports of flags associated with efforts to keep former President Donald Trump in power being displayed outside Alito’s home. Despite the controversy, Alito has refused to step aside from these cases.

One particular flag, an upside-down American flag, historically a symbol of distress, was used by Trump supporters protesting his 2020 election loss and became emblematic of the 'Stop the Steal' movement.

Another flag, an 'Appeal to Heaven' flag, was flown at Alito’s New Jersey vacation home in 2023. While the flag dates back to the Revolutionary War, it has recently been adopted by conservative groups advocating for a Biblically centered government and was seen among the mob during the Capitol riot.

Alito defended the display, stating that his wife, Martha-Ann Alito, had chosen to raise the flag at their home, asserting her "legal right to use the property as she sees fit" and describing her as "fond of flying flags."

Justice Clarence Thomas is facing similar scrutiny over his wife Virginia Thomas' involvement in the efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Despite mounting pressure, Thomas has also refused to recuse himself from related cases.

His impartiality has been further questioned following a ProPublica investigation that revealed he had accepted extravagant gifts and vacations from billionaire Harlan Crow, a significant political figure with interests potentially influencing the court.

Chris Murphy's comments lambasting Supreme Court resonate online

Murphy's comments quickly gained traction on social media, with users expressing their agreement over the perceived corruption within the Supreme Court.

One user on Facebook stated, "Absolute power is damaging and the same is the case with the Supreme Court in this country." Another added, "He is correct… they have become partisan hacks that work for outside money and interests… and they are self-governed so the American people are without a judicial branch of government."

"Conservatives, and their lack of morals, have made this the most corrupt SCOTUS in the history of our country. It’s an embarrassment for our country," wrote one user. Another opined, "The only people who would disagree are the ones who believe the US should be under a one-party rule… aka dictatorship."

"It's corruption brought to you by the one and only DJT," one user declared. Another noted, "SCOTUS is corrupt because the orange felon stacked the court."

A seventh user commented, "Conservatives opposing a code of ethics tells us all we need to know," while another added, "The right is busy undermining another American institution with its politics."
