WASHINGTON, DC: Former MSNBC host and political analyst Chris Matthews has warned that elite critics of President Joe Biden might face consequences for their stance.

Matthews' remarks came as he discussed Biden's political future on MSNBC’s 'Morning Joe' on Thursday, July 11, amid rising Democrats within and outside the party asking him to step aside.

Chris Matthews argues Joe Biden's core support will lead to a strong comeback

Matthews believes that despite the criticism, Biden will rally the core Democratic base, including poor people, minorities, and labor groups, leading to a strong comeback.

“Right now, he’s got the poor people, he’s got minorities, he’s got Hispanics, he’s going to put out labor, he’s going to hold that base of the Democratic Party, which he will need in November,” Matthews said, according to The Hill.

“And I’m telling you, people are going to end up rooting for him in October, because he will have a comeback. And then this elite-fashioned attack on him, they’re going to pay for it,” he added.

Matthews' comments follow reports of several top donors, including actor George Clooney, threatening to withhold money from Biden's campaign if he continues as the nominee.

More recently, another prominent actress and democrat supporter, Ashley Judd, also joined calls asking Biden to step aside, arguing that Trump's presidency 'cannot be America’s future.'

She argued that Biden 'was incapable of countering Trump' during the debate.  Despite this, Matthews asserts that critics will ultimately support Biden in the election.

Chris Matthews says Joe Biden is not built to quit and will depend on core Democrats for his decision

Matthews also mentioned Biden's tendency to listen more to trusted advisers such as First Lady Jill Biden, rather than elite critics like Clooney.

“I think Biden will be the little guy that will be the Democrat in this race, the true Democrat, and he’s going to get people to turn for him in October,” Matthews said.

“It’s going to be stunning. He is not quitting. He is not built to quit,” he added.

These remarks were made ahead of Biden’s pivotal press conference at the NATO summit in Washington, which came two weeks after a poor debate performance.

Internet agrees with Chris Matthews over Joe Biden’s presidential race

Internet reactions were mixed with some questioning Biden's ability to govern for another term. However, the majority of users sided with Matthews arguing people were the ultimate deciding factor.

“But can he actually govern for four more years?” asked one user.

Another person defended Biden, noting that the power lies with the people saying, “Many voted for Biden in the primaries for his achievements and leadership. Now, some elite Democrats may withdraw their support, but elections are decided by the people, not a few elites."

"The power lies with the people, and their votes will shape the future. Keeping Biden as the nominee is the only way the party can prove it really stands for democracy," the user added further.

Others took a lighter approach, joking about Biden's gaffe during the press conference. “Vice President Trump is so mad right now,” one user joked, referring to Biden mistakenly calling Kamala Harris "Vice President Trump."

Despite the criticism, some voters expressed their intent to support Biden if he remains the nominee.

“The Biden naysayers like me will still vote Biden if he is indeed the nominee. We are absolutely concerned that he can’t carry the battleground states. It’s all about the electoral college,” wrote another user.

However, not all comments were positive. One user criticized Matthews' remarks as sounding authoritarian. “Sounds very dictatorial and fascist," the user expressed.

Another wrote, "Sounds every bit as much of a threat as what critics of Trump are saying about his supposed plans for retribution.”
