WASHINGTON, DC: Amid escalating tensions in the Gaza Strip, President Joe Biden ignited a firestorm when he unveiled a controversial ceasefire proposal that he claimed was backed by the Israeli government.

In a nationally televised address on Friday, May 31, the POTUS urged Hamas to accept what he described as a three-phase peace deal put forth by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as per The Guardian.

During his speech on Friday, President Biden outlined the framework of the three-phase agreement, saying, "It’s time for this war to end … for the day after to begin," emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

A senior administration official confirmed that the four-and-a-half-page proposal had been endorsed by the Israeli government led by Netanyahu and presented to Hamas. Late on Friday, Hamas issued a statement responding positively to Biden's proposal.

However, it remains unclear how strongly Netanyahu supports the peace proposal. Biden's speech coincided with the Jewish Shabbat, a time when most Israeli politicians refrain from official duties.

The Israeli prime minister's office released a somewhat ambiguous statement after the POTUS' speech, indicating that while a negotiating team had been authorized to present a plan for the return of hostages, Israel would continue its military operations.

"The government of Israel is united in its desire to return the hostages as soon as possible and is working to achieve this goal. The prime minister authorized the negotiating team to present a proposal to that end, which would also enable Israel to continue the war until all its objectives are achieved, including the destruction of Hamas’s military and governing capabilities," read the statement.

The proposal includes a phased approach where the first phase would last six weeks, featuring a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all populated areas of Gaza. In return, Hamas would release a number of hostages, including women, elderly, and wounded individuals, and Israel would free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Additionally, the remains of some deceased hostages would be returned to their families. Crossings into Gaza would be opened to allow 600 truckloads of assistance daily for its 2.3 million residents, as per the requirements of aid agencies.
