Internet backs Democrats as they express concern over Joe Biden for lacking popularity among voters
WASHINGTON, DC: Politicians and strategists on the Democratic side are worried that voters' enthusiasm for down-ballot candidates isn't translating to President Joe Biden, according to a new report.
Traditional political wisdom maintains that a powerful national leader benefits the party as a whole by extension, but in Biden's case the opposite seems to be true. The Democrats won other races, including the New York House seat held by former Representative George Santos, even after the president's increasing unpopularity and they stopped a Republican landslide in the 2022 midterm elections.
Former New York representative Steve Israel opens up on the issue
"There’s a disconnect between the successes we’re having locally and in specials, and the environments we’re experiencing at and near the top of the ticket," former New York Representative Steve Israel told Politico on Thursday, June 20.
"It is the fundamental challenge confronting Democrats right now: Why are we doing as well as we’re doing on the ground, in local and state elections, but we still have this very tight polling at the presidential?" Israel asked.
What did Democratic political strategist Neil Oxman say?
"Democrats are enthusiastic about trying to win the Senate and trying to win the House," Democratic political strategist Neil Oxman said, adding that they're "not enthusiastic about Biden’s reelection," according to Fox News.
Donald Trump has largely maintained a narrow lead over Joe Biden till now
For the first half of 2024, Trump has essentially maintained a narrow lead over Biden nationally, despite fluctuations in their respective popularity over the past few months. However, voters seem more upbeat about the economy, according to a May Fox News national survey which placed Biden as the current front-runner against Trump.
Many Democrats remain uneasy about Biden's leadership role within the party, particularly as the presidential contest draws near.
Representative Dean Phillips says 'you can’t ignore the truth'
"You can’t ignore the truth and that people have concerns about his stage of life," Representative Dean Phillips, D-Minn, told Politico. Phillips conducted a fruitless campaign to unseat Biden as the Democratic Party's eventual presidential nominee before he left the race early in March.
"I would argue that it’s time to lean into that and to be self-deprecating and to start focusing on what people really care a lot about, which is economic security and personal safety," Phillips said.
Dean Phillips was an outspoken critic of Joe Biden
During Biden's campaign, Phillips was a vocal opponent of the president, frequently drawing attention to his old age. In February, following Special Counsel Robert Hur's report which revealed that Biden was having trouble recalling important details and events such as his vice presidential term and the precise day of his son Beau's death, Phillips declared that the president's "decline" was evident.
Democrat Tom Suozzi says Joe Biden faces an 'enthusiasm gap' with voters
Democrat Representative Tom Suozzi, who took over for Santos in February, claimed that Biden's "enthusiasm gap" with voters exists.
"We passed the biggest climate change act in the history of America after people ignored it for 40 years, and the president led the way on that, and nobody really knows that," Suozzi told Politico, adding "And former President Trump is saying to the oil companies ‘help me raise a billion dollars and I’m gonna roll back all this stuff.'"
"I mean, if young people knew that, I think we could get some of that enthusiasm gap back," Suozzi continued.
Biden campaign spokesperson said many voters are not yet fully 'tuned into the presidential race'
A Biden campaign spokesperson told Politico that many voters are not yet fully "tuned into the presidential race."
"It’s going to take intensive time and effort to reach the voters who are going to decide the election who are not paying attention yet," Biden campaign spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg told Politico, adding "And the Biden-Harris campaign is putting in the disciplined, persistent, long-term work that’s needed to do it."
Internet users predict Donald Trump's 'landslide in Nov'
Netizens reacted after several democrats expressed their concerns over Biden's popularity among voters. One X user predicted, "Trumps landslide in Nov." Another added, "He's always touching himself for no reason. Wierd Joe."
"It's no surprise that Democrats aren't enthusiastic about Biden. Despite any success in the House, Biden's weak leadership is dragging America down. His policies are a disaster, and even his own party can see it. We need strong, decisive leadership like Trump to make America great again! Let's restore real success and prosperity!," penned one.
"Ominous nobody with common sense should be the next president has a lot of geopolitical work to do, a lot of travellings, discussions ..............hummmmmm," said another.
